Craigslist

Do any of you advertise on Craigslist? yes / no? I have for some time but I'm beginning to see how ugly it can be..do some of you have similar experiences..thank you.

Another contractor in town is attacking my business
I don't know why
He walks around with hood over his head and drives a beat up caravan
I tried to be nice and accommodating
I think hes threatened by the competition in the area..I don't get it..
there's plenty of work

Id appreciate some ideas on advertising

Re: Craigslist

Never, ever, try to 'take on' someone who badmouths you. It's a no-win situation no matter how dispicable they are and/or how fantastic you are. Responding to the dolt only lowers you to his level.

Look into the Terms of Service on CL. Ignore him, but also flag his posts a bunch of times so maybe CL will block his domain.

Forget this guy. He's a loser. Losers like to drag people down to their level.

There are some vicious people on CL. They look at it as there own private source of leads. Then when someone new pokes in - they attack them to drive them off. I tried it a few years ago and every day these jerks would have my listings taken down and then they'd put up derogatory attacks on me. My buddy that owns Reno Tahoe Window Tint says the same thing happened to him recently. He fought them for a few weeks and then gave up. He said the attacks on his business and his character went on for weeks after he gave up too.

Re: Craigslist

Ignore the guy and I suggest ignoring CL. All you will ever get is CL type work.
As far as getting started try local paper ads, flyers and introducing yourself around the lumber yard.

He's a bottom feeder... your business is an asset... approach it from that perspective... guys like this don't respond to YOU telling him to stop or even being reasonable... document the issue by sending him a cease and desist letter as well as flagging him on Craigslist for spreading false information on your company (screen capture his postings on CL)... if he doesn't respond or if CL doesn't get pro-active with his spamming, spend the $100 and have a lawyer draft it and send it as well as copying CL...

Get ahead of it before you find yourself behind it... just like a newly painted home, a good reputation take time to develop and it's easy for idiots to throw crap at it... until it's taken care of, you don't want people to think your house is crappy when it's not...

Re: Craigslist

CL has been mostly tire kickers and people who try and haggle on everything. If you really want to know who the guy is just look through all of the posts on there looking for work and you'll find his writing style and sentence structure recognizable more than likely. Facebook ads have worked pretty good for me.

Dave
heres what I did in the beginning.
I was newly licensed ,didn`t get enough calls.
this is before cell phones ( lol)
I`d go don`t the pages , and call or fax , anyone I could in the interior design, or architecture sections
I literally did this 2 days straight once when I was real slow.

I`d make it simple , and quick " hey > I`m a carpenter. I do doors and crown moldings. I can do full remodels
can I send you some pics? or info on my company?"
call painting contractors . we do rotted wood repair for a couple.

call any trade guy.
most need a carpenter
tile man needs a carpenter now and then .
independent plumbers, electricians and a/c guys need someone to patch a hole allot of times

call realtors ( they usually want a finders fee though)
now I always get email addresses ( I have well over 2000 by now)

I try to now and then shoot out a few pics of what we did this immediate month and say" hey! I`m still around. here some of the things we`ve done lately. let me know if you need us.

this all works

That does look like a good technique Woodyacd. I'll have to revisit Cl to try this out for sure.

Re: Craigslist

It's not bad here. I've got all kinds of work off craigslist and I've made a couple of good friends. It's just like the world at large, it is the world at large, you've got regular cool people and you've got psychos. It's up to you to tell the difference. Exercise some judgement when you post and don't put up too much personal information. Although it's getting crowded it sure beats that racket Angie's got goin'

Re: Craigslist

Why not use Craigslist to market your services? Craigslist is a good resource and you won't hurt anyone by doing that. As for your competitor, just keep your head high and do the best job always, with no exceptions.
