Which Company Name Sounds Better?

This is speaking on the whole branding of my paint company. Which will be more likely to be imprinted on potential customers minds more?

Colonial Custom Painting

or

4Th Generation Painting

Let the poll begin

4th Generation is better

way too many companies that use colonial and custom for part of their name

Re: Which Company Name Sounds Better?

Colonial could brand you by having people think that you only do restoration or period work. That was my first impression.

This is a vague question in my mind.

Ad man - "Of the two names, which is easier to remember?"

Me - "I wonder what we're having for dinner."

Now, put a busty lady beside those names, and all I will remember is,

"Colonial Custom Nipples"

or "4th Generation Cleavage"

4th.

If I lived in a trailer park I would not want to call Colonial they only work on the nice expensive homes. On the flip side if I lived in a nice home I would not want to have Trailer park Painters paint my home.

We have a local plumbing company that has a POA in their ads. I know who I will call if I ever need one.

Look under Escorts, it'll be cheaper than calling a plumber if you need a POA

If I'm looking for a plumber I would look for a POA, Plumbers Of America. Rhode Island has some full service clubs for paid POA's.

$100-$300, the work does not come with any warranty.

that's relatively cheap for a POA member. Isn't GEM plumbing a member?

oh, i'd go with 4th Gen Painter out of the 2...

Yes, Gem is a member. They are a higher price service and they offer a warranty. Actually I think they might be the most expensive plumbing service in the area.

4Th Generation Painting
You've got two separate questions
One in your title, one in your post

1) Which company name sounds better?
Colonial Custom Painting
It has a much better flow, and sounds better spoken
It would sound great on a radio ad
It also has the alliteration, which is known to be a mnemonic device

2) Which will be more likely to be imprinted on potential customers minds more?
4th Generation Painting is awkward to say, and awkward to look at, and it doesn't have the alliteration
But it's very unique and therefore memorable

Someone might kinda remember Comfortable Cushion Painting, or Custom Colony Painting
But they won't 'kinda' remember 4th Generation...they'll remember it or not

We use ***X Roofing, Four Generations of Service.

The naysayers may not think it carries weight, but how do you knock the depth of knowledge, experience and problem solving that comes from information passed down from those who have gone before? Not having to re-invent the wheel is a huge advantage in the construction trades.

I'm with hrscammisa

Use a word that everyone knows, yet isn't commonly used, inspires the IDEA of what you do, isn't your family name, and you've got a winner.

4th Gen describes you. And frankly, if i'm having my house painted is it comforting to know that great grandpa might actually be giving advice as to how to do the job? Or that the processes are vaguely familiar. Reference the experience, but don't base your branding around it.

Skip custom likewise - look at the yellow pages and find everyone talking about the custom job they're going to do.

Are you specializing in Colonials?

Plays off of the ideas of color?
  • Prime Painting
  • Prism Painting
  • Violet Painting (leave every customer a violet plant at the end of the job)
  • Wizard Painting
  • Four Brushes for Four Generations
Your profile doesn't show where you are located ... but you could also leverage something local - or maybe that's where Colonial came from?

Just my $0.02
