Clarification Needed, Please.....

....since I found this site a few months ago, I've been able to apply the SEO tactics given in this site to our own website. However, from time to time, I come across a thread, or response to other threads of someone stating a "direct mail" campaign. Now, to me this seems like you target a particular demo-graphic and mail out some of your marketing material, is this so? If not, what exactly is it? Also, how can I go about starting my own 'newsletter' to send out to local businesses and what content should I include? Any examples of something like that would help.

You have the gist of a direct mail campaign down - there is a lot to it & is has been discussed by quite a few members that have done.

A newsletter - I would not recommend mailing it (except for maybe to a few people without internet access), simply doing it on line. You have a few options in this area for what goes into it - you can create timely articles or info you want to push out, have a company do it for you, or even purchase existing ones that all you have to do is modify.

You can either push them out to individuals that sign up for it online via email, or have them access the articles on your website. I would recommend going with both options, heres our newest newsletter, if you would like to review past newsletters please click here.

This issue has also been discussed a lot here to

Not pertinent, but I 'looked' at your site. If I hadn't decided to 'View Source', I wouldn't have known anything was there except the dark blue background. That's the only thing I found.

Now I know what a flash site is, I guess.

SLS, thanks. Based on that response, I have been doing that for a while now, I just wasn't quite sure if that's what it was. As for the newsletter thing, I would do it as an online thing only, but what are the benefits in doing one for us in this industry other than educating the reciepients of the newsletter? I guess one way would be to announce any special "discounts" you might offer, or to showcase a particular product you offer (if you're a distributor, or carpenter).

Tinner, I didn't understand what you were hinting. I guess you didn't have Adobe Flash installed in your computer?

I keep activeX and flash disabled. They're there, but might as well be elsewhere.
Never found a use for them.

I forgot to mention. There is talk at some of the webmaster forums that Google is going to be 'upgraded' so it can eventually index flash sites.

Currently, unless they've started, flash sites aren't very good SEO wise. ( My news could already be old by now, because I don't follow those threads every day.

....actually, Google has already begun doing that. Our site is up in many of our keywords in the first page (primarily within the first top 5 listed links) and in some instances we're in the "Google Maps" portion of certain searches.

Basically it is to help educate the HO & to keep your name at the top of their mind for who am I going to call. It also helps establish you as an industry expert. (mind you I haven't started doing one yet, but it will be up & running within a year) It also can be a way of showing off other projects you have done & as an idea book for potential customers.

You might also consider printing out & keeping a few of your newsletters with you, you can leave it as a brochure for people to peruse for XYZ project. For instance, an article on Bathroom design, you can leave with a client considering it - hopefully they will then go online, peruse older articles & sign up for your next one.

Google started indexing portions of flash in September 2008 and on February 9th of this year, they added some additional details.

Read www.MarketingSherpa.com to find out more. He wrote a 2 part article on it and I posted part 2 at The Contractors Club.
