Re: Church Bulletin

If someone has to tell you they are a christian RUN as far as you can away. They always want a "deal" but demand better than the best you have to offer. I always charge 30% more then offer a 20% discount just because they have to tell me thay are a christian. Don't get me wrong, I am a God fearing man, however if someone has to use that as a reason to get a "deal" then they are not christian. After all we are in business to put food on our tables, by asking for a "deal" you are taking food out of my family's mouth. After all business is business. It should should never mix with religion. I will offer to do jobs free of charge on the building if the materails are provided. That is the "christian way".

So true. I've often wondered why this is because it clearly defies what the Bible says. I suspect it probably stems from some bogus teaching in many churches on "stewardship" (the idea that you must protect "God's" money by being frugal to the extreme). I know the Bible very well, and that is not in there. What it does teach is "love your neighbor as yourself" and "do to others as you would have them do to you."

Exactly! According to the real teaching of the Bible, Christians ought to be the most generous people on Earth. God is NOT stingy, and anyone claiming to be a follower of him is deceived if they think stinginess is biblical.

I've discovered there are two kinds of Christians. The "religious" ones are the kind you usually meet, they are the majority, and your bad experiences with them described in this thread are accurate. The "real" ones are different, and instead of looking for a deal, they would give you extra just to be a blessing.

Re: Church Bulletin

....and so this brings us to the best way to advertise for a church. Do a free donation for the church with a project or two. Gets your work noticed and your workmanship. That is a better seller then any ad. In a busy location, where other people see it too, makes it even better.

Mine? If you ever drive thru Flint, Michigan, there is a Church (won't mention which one), on Bristol road right next to 475. Something on that church is mine and has got me a lot of business. Both from people who use that church and people who don't but see it from the road.

Re: Church Bulletin

I had a job for the church in which I offered to do it free including materials, for 2 months in there bulletin board. The manager just handed me the bulletins company number. So for the price i offered to do the job for I can now have them do it for 6 months. I was happy with getting the money cause I didnt realize they had 5 masses of which only 2 were really decent sizes.

Re: Church Bulletin

I did this for a while. Had a church member hire me for a job. Said he would give me the amount that another company bid for it, just wanted to see the job go to a fellow church member, or so he said. I was just starting out and like an idiot only had a verbal agreement for the work. When all was done (and it turned out great) he stiffed me for half the money saying I did it in half the time the other guy quoted him, so it should only cost him half.

He was a reputable member and in good w/ the pastor and deacons, so no one wanted to hear about me getting screwed over. Real ignorant. But, in all reality, it was my bad for ever taking someone at their word.

Re: Church Bulletin

I'm real lax when it comes to written estimates and contracts. I have to get better as PA law now requires a contract on any residential work over $500. Sounds like you have already approached the pastor and deacons about the problem customer. To me it sounds like they like his weekly contributions a little better than yours. I'd pray for direction, I mean directions...to another church. I usually run when someone declares their Christianity. Like someone else said... If you have to tell me then your probably not.

Re: Church Bulletin

I think i have made the decision to do the ad in the bulletin. I made this decision because even though my family name is know in the churches that combined alot of them dont know i am in the construction business. So I think this will give me a little bit of extra volume in customers that I need.

Re: Church Bulletin

My Wife is an interior designer and she has successfully advertised in our bulletin (Catholic) for some time - and it has worked well for her.

If you don't want to be in your own, you can always advertise in the one down the street.

Our Diocese also puts out a weekly newspaper with some classifieds in the back. A few years ago I hired a guy from there to fab some new countertops for us. He told me at the time he gets 50% of his business from that newspaper - and the ads are cheap!

Re: Church Bulletin

I've advertised in our church magazine which goes to 100,000 people (over the entire country, but the headquarters is in my city) and out of 6 runs I've gotten one job. I'm thinking about continuing however as 90% of my customers already get this magazine, they just found me through referrals. It's only $50 a run, less if you do it long term.

Is that the N.H.B.C. with the white rail fence across from the Speedway Gas Station? The one with the cool sign on stone columns?
