I think I know who is behind this website and the strategy here -- will make some calls tomorrow to verify my intuition and report on the findings.

"The company that goes through all the trouble to give information overload to a prospect who is getting ready to part with money that they need for a myriad of other things, and makes the prospect a partner in the decision is a Roofing Contractor with their finger on the pulse of their market. This is proactive to a new level."

This describes me..... BUT!!! I've never felt like I had my "finger on the pulse of their market."
I do feel like the person getting ready to spend thousands should have a very, very good idea of what's involved. Even if I don't get hired, I honestly hope they learned enough from me and my site to NOT hire a JL that will cost them much more at a later date. That, to me, is much more important than a sale. Sorry if that attitude offends anybody, but that's ME.

I understand what your saying but with no work ever that may put the importance of closing the deal back out front.

Nice site! The estimate was very complete. I still like to get a little "face time'' , if you know what i mean. Preparing an estimate like that in the truck and going back in for the kill on the first call would be great!

Re: Check Out This Website.

To MEL,

Guess what - he does sell! Maybe not so much now, as his site is young, and does not pull in much traffic ... yet.

But it will pull in local and national traffic, because the site is great, and very well designed, and gives the homeowner the info they are looking for. And this guy will do great. And you will go to meet tire kickers face to face, and waste your time and hate people. And you don't have a website, but even if you did, it would probably suck - because you want to hide useful info from your potential customers, and you want to password-protect it....

You see, my last two sales were done over the email/phone, and I went to see the customers face to face, to actually show that I do exist (to re-assure the customer sort of... show the actual product sample, etc.), and to see that customer exists, and to verify that there is no funny stuff left out and to collect the deposit check.

My website does the selling now, and I act as an alive link between virtual company (website) + the actual company and the customer.

I put countless hours to provide MY potential customers with as much info about our roofing business and the products we install, as well as other relevant roofing information the 99% of my customers are looking for.
Now my sleepless nights are paying for themselves. I don't have to advertise in yellow pages, I don't have to "prove" each time to my customer that they deal with the best roofers and get the personal service they expect and deserve. My site does it for me.....

Hopefully you understand what I'm trying to say ...

Good luck.

I've seldom met clients before I started work. Does it really feel great? Just curious. I met today's client 1/2 way through the job. Never got around to sending an estimate either. Just dealt by phone on this one, though it was an internet lead. He didn't want to use e-mail. I drove by, called with a price and started work. I'll mail an invoice tomorrow.

To tinner,

You see, most of you jobs are probably repairs (the impression I got so far from you) so what is it - like few hundred bucks? I can't do a job without a contract as my jobs are few grand... so no invoice - need to meet face to face... but the sale is pretty much complete before I even come out.

To be honest, I prefer repair and detail work. But, some of my jobs are in excess of $60K. Many are above $25K. I often only see a deposit, then send an invoice later.

Re: Check Out This Website.

I loved his approach - 1) He can schedule his trip without having to make arrangements for the home owner to be there 2) He can take his time and get all the details 3) His video / pictures can help him review the project to help them remember all the items that may be needed 4) It gives him documentation for before and after 5) I don't know many home owners that like to get up on a roof anyway 6) If his documentation, bid process and his reputation is such that the Customer feels comfortable using this method - I would love to have the proposal sent back and be able to schedule the job.

I did not get the impression he would NOT meet with a customer - he saved both the customer's time and his bid time was very effective.

The process looks great.

Re: Check Out This Website.

I like the idea personally.

The only thing he misses by doing it when they are not home, is the interior attic inspection.

But, sometimes you can be too high tech. One of my favorite competitors gets asked to leave peoples homes, when he meets with them and starts to set up his cam-corder and laptop to show all of the digital work he did when he was surveying the home for problems and suggested solutions.

He does very well otherwise though, but I do know personally, that many people do not want someone so advanced, because they have the preconceived notion that the price wil be reflective to the extraordinary due diligence undertook.

At least with this contractor with the website from this thread, he puts the technology into their privacy and comfort of their own home, for them to check out at their leisure.

I think he deserves an Atta-Boy!!!

This guy is ahead of the game! He realizes that more and more people are going to search the internet to find companies to do business with.

I been thinking of going to this system and firing every salesmen I have working for me.

Re: Check Out This Website.

Bill Thomas Jr. returned my call today, and the results of that conversation are posted on The Construction Marketing Ideas blog (with appropriate back links to contractortalk.com).

http://constructionmarketingideas.bl...ve-online.html

Thomas says the publicity has resulted in some unplanned results -- he says seven local competitors made threatening calls to him, and he has received many uninvited solicitations, etc.

Regardless, he says his business is doing well and he is willing to share his insights with non-competitive contractors.

Re: Check Out This Website.

What I'm going to do is when I need a new roof on my house, I'm going to call this guy. Then when he gives me that great detailed written estimate with pictures, I"m going to print out 12 copies and call 12 roofing contractors, give them all a copy of that guys estimate and pictures and see who will include all his work for a lessor price.
Thanks MD Roofing Guy. YEAH ME!!

Sure, and he'd be happy that you use one of those guys just chasing low bids. Walker understands that convenience combined with trust allows him to get the clients he really wants -- who pay properly, are loyal and refer their friends. He understands the basics (and more) of successful construction industry marketing.

You are using the lack of intelligence that a few home owners Ihave dealt with in the past.

They liked everything that I had proposed to do in my detailed specifications, but they desired to have someone else Match MY Specs with the low price they were given by some hack.

Well, it seems that when I specifically state 4-ply exterior grade cdx of 5-ply Douglas Fir, the hack that "Matched" my specs "Verbally", decided that 7/16" OSB was the same thing.

Another one said they could re-route a plumbing vent that was located dead center in a valley.

Many others say they would use the Ice and Water Shield, which I specify only Grace, but somehow the Alco toilet paper with sand was substituted because they said it was the same.

Shingle Vent II Ridge Ventilation for the entire length of all of the recommended ridge lines have either been partial lengths or mushroom style turtle vents, because they vent just the same.

Whoops, they forgot to order 30# felt paper and used 15# instead, but it is just the same as what I specified.

Sheet metal drip edge metals? Well, the extra inch or two that they hung the shingles over the edges totally wiped out that rationale, didn't it, so the shingle overhang was just the same.

Tarping the torn off, but not yet roofed sections every single night? Wel, isn't that what the felt paper is for, even though it has thousands of slap tacker staple holes in it?

Ohhhh, you mean Ed was going to actually pull a dump truck in and out of the driveway each day. Well, isn't a full 20 yard dumpster skidded across your lawn doing the same job?

Why use several magnets on wheels? Their crew that got the job never leaves any nails on the ground or in the driveway. They use the home owners vehicles tires to pick up the loose ones. Isn't that the same?

I hope you were attempting to be sarcastic, because that idiotic response is exactly what an uninformed home owner May think, until further notified.

There is a reason that we specify things to be done a certain way. Because we train to do things right.

When someone else attempts to do the same as their first experience with quality, they don't know what to do and fall back on old habits and screw up.

Look my point is you have to watch how much information you give home owners. A lot of them will run with your printed estimate and use your pricing and spec sheets to get a better deal.
I'm not against give out a nice detailed proposal, but it would be nicer to get paid for it. Why do you see "Call For A Free Consultation" vs. "Free Estimate". Well? It's because if the home owner gets a printed estimate one he is going to pay for one and the other is free. You can spend a lot of time drawing up pretty plans and specs just to be used by some other remodel er.
