Age And Marketing Method...

I've noticed that almost all my remodel work that has come from some kind of internet source has been from fairly young people. The average age is probably 30 or so. I've had a few that were in their forties and one that might have been fifty.

Then there are the people who have driven by our homes and asked for cards and those can be whatever age, but, that is where I've gotten most of our older clients.

I have a friend who puts out small ads in the nickel newspapers and classifieds and he seems to have lots of older clients.

My question is threefold,

1. Do you think different marketing methods produce different customers in both age and price range?

2. If so what age do you think are the best customers and what do you think is the best way to target them?

3. Then on top of that, what way do you think is best to target the higher price range clients of that age?

Wack

1. Yes.

2. There's no age for "best customer". But I would develop a marketing plan that defines your target market and how you will cater to their needs and sell benefits to them.

3. Referrals and word of mouth buzz. Develop a referral program that offers incentives for getting your name out to score more work.

Re: Age And Marketing Method...

I've found we get two classes through our internet adds. Those who are younger and maybe on their first home. Great if they are yuppies! Also those who stay at home, such as stay at home moms and retired folks. These people tend to research more.

We sell to each class differently. Yuppies buy more sizzle, more bling. Retired folk buy more stake, more practicality. Identify your customer regardless of their method of contact.

To answer your questions, Matt already took the words out of my mouth.

Re: Age And Marketing Method...

If I had to pick my group it would be 50 and up, Baby Boomers, I am one and I know my target audience. But selling is selling and all age groups are good, you just have to go with the flow. Starting next year my main target audience will be the 50 and up crowd because of size (75 million) and they have more money than other age groups.
Methods will be Home Shows, special interest publications and networking.
I will be concentrating on Universal Design and Aging in Place. I am an expert on the latter( well at least I can relate).

By aging in place do you mean "getting old but staying in your house"? And if you could, please explain "universal design".

Thanks,

Wack

I have online hardware retail store and I get only people from google search.
I tried putting my business cards on the mail boxes and car's windshields but not much luck.

Re: Age And Marketing Method...

Wackman,
Thats it exactly! Aging in Place is about people who like where they live, but now they could use some better designs for living. And they don't want to move. Levers instead of knobs on doors for arthritis sufferers. Wider doors for wheelchair. Auto on light switches, a ramp for others, no thresholds ect and the list goes on.
Universal design is design for everyone, it incorporates all age groups and abilities into the design. This is the future for me and 75 million other baby boomers!
