Afraid To Hang Doorhangers

We've been in business for 20 years and have never advertised. In order to start targeting a new area and a new market niche we're going to experiment with a doorhanger/mailer/postcard campaign spacing each one out by 4-6 weeks or so. Many of the areas we work in aren't really conducive to doorhangers just because it would take 30 minutes to walk up and down the driveways of the five homes that don't have gates. But there are quite a few areas where doorhangers are do-able. We had Keith at KBK Graphx design a PHENOMENAL looking doorhanger (if you are in need of any print or web design services I highly recommend Keith, I can't say enough good things about him), had some printed up (they look even better in print than they did on the screen!) and are ready to go. The problem is that my poor husband is mortified to walk around and hang them. Thank goodness he didn't read Orson's post about getting read the riot act for approaching someone's house or else that would be the end of it. He feels like it is too much like door to door sales. Personally, in our neighborhood, I don't feel like that is the case at all. I think it's an inobtrusive way to advertise and I feel that folks are more likely to actually look at the thing they have to pull off of their door than they are to look at a newspaper insert or bulk mailer. We get very few doorhangers and I always enjoy reading them. I much prefer them over a business card rubberbanded to my doorhandle - those make me want to go ballistic but to each his own and I am digressing.

I think deciding whether doorhangers are appropriate or not depend on the neighborhood and demographic. I think we've picked a few good areas where they would be an effective way to at least establish some name recognition and now we just need to suck it up and go for it. I think it's better that we do it ourselves (rather than hiring someone to hang them) in case someone actually does approach us with a complaint or have a question.

Anyone else have a hard time with this? Any advice?

BTW - here is Keith's amazing work. It really does look even better in print:

That's a good looking door hanger. People might hold on to that one; and ,while some will call right away, it might continue to get you business.

Re: Afraid To Hang Doorhangers

Awesome looking door hanger.

Your "green" offerings will definitely appeal to the residents in RHE, Palos Verdes, and the other South Bay beach communities. They have a heightened awareness of the environment and being green, not to mention large discretionary incomes ($$$ ).

I say hire a company to distribute them and hang away. I would, however, check with the local city hall to determine if you need a permit or other permission to distribute your advertising materials.

If you have been in business 20 years why do you need door hangers?

You should have a fantastic list of clients already. Have you mailed to them?

If you need to do hangers I agree to hire it out.

Moonwalk to and from the house when placing door hangers, they won't know if you are coming or going.

I think I mentioned in my original post that we're looking to target a new area with a new focus. We do have a fantastic list of clients who live on the other side of town. If you lived in Southern California and drove up the 405 from the South Bay to Brentwood every day you'd understand why we'd like to target an area closer to our home. The 405 is brutal!

Re: Afraid To Hang Doorhangers

I would never hire out hanging doorhangers to someone. What if someone wants an estimate?
You don't know how many times I've been hanging door hangers and the next thing you know I'm in their house with a tape measure and a smile.

Steve

That fin***p.com is a scam and they use underhanded methods to advertise, I would have to recomend that the users here stay as far away from them as possible.

Would you believe that the permit in RHE is $200 for 90 days and $500 for the year? And that is after you have been fingerprinted and filled out forms up the wazoo.... It is a completely separate permit from our regular business license.

Re: Afraid To Hang Doorhangers

I understand your husband that does not want to go and walk. But he have to do it,because I do consider that its almost impossible to find somebody trustwordy enough to pass your flyers around without you being cheated.
Like somebody already said here, you never know when you will end up inside a new prospect's house with tape measure in hand if you do it yourself. In my experience I always take care of that part, early morning or when things are slow down I always set time aside for this job, some day I will have my son to help me. But when i pay somebody to do this, i found several times that 100 out of 1000 flyers are not distributed because labor simply don't care about my bus.

Make it a great day!

PS: It does not matter how long you had been in business. You always need to advertise!- its a mith that after a certain amount of time you do not need to advertise, if you doubth this, look CocaCola, still heavily advertise.

Unless you are targeting beverly hills or the white house(figuratively speaking-of course) I will think you need a special permit for this.

Re: Afraid To Hang Doorhangers

Door hangers are awesome for areas you are starting work in. It's called close proximity marketing.
You door hanger the entire neighborhood. And maybe a few neighboring ones.
Then a couple days later the homeowners see your lettered trucks driving by.
Just keep burning your brand in their minds.

Follow up and do another round of door hangers/flyers/brochures in the same places. And maybe a third time a month later. Stay in their face.
