What I thought was excellent was your click through and conversation rates. I am getting nothing like that. I just assumed most people don't click sponsored adds, I know I don't. I may have one click for every 195 impressions. That's what I thought was excellent!

Re: Adwords Experiment

Ok I'll start this today and hope to keep it going giving info and answering questions best I can.

1. I have had a constuction website for 8 years. I rank high (organically) for the 4 most popular(PPC) words. SO I dont pay for those words if you search google I am number 1 or two. The 4 words are the most search terms in my area for contractors/remodelers.

2. You have to choose the right keywords even change wording positioning as needed ex.
washington dc general contractor V.S. general contractor in washington dc

one may be 5.00 per click the other 1.00 per click.

3. The more popular the word(s) the more people bidding so if you choose the right combination of words that others aren't bidding on, the lower cost per click and you have a higher conversion rate.

4. YOUr ADS HAVE TO STAND OUT. you have to write good ads that appeal to buyers not the same old tired crap everyone one is doing.

EXample this was one of my actual ads for a while

Custom kitchens
$45,000-85,000k
We build your dreams
www.rbsremodeling.com

5. If you don't want to put pricing using something catchy to get them to click and come to your site.

Scarey basement?
Dark, Dingy, needs remodeling?
ABC Contractors we ain't scared

6 PLEASE Don't have a crappy site.

7 Don't go over board on your site. Keep it simple with VERY GOOD PICTURES. average person is on your site 1-2 minutes. they get info and leave attention spans are short keep it real simple.

8. Don't get into a bidding war on words let the other guy get the hit if a word or phase is to expensive go for the 2-5 position they still come up on the first page where you are visible to consumers. But you want to be on the first page.

9. Monitor you adwords daily make notes of whats working and keep making changes. Keep notes!!!!!!!!!!

10. If you are a small contractor. limit you ad range. for example you can choose specific counties in a state that is your radius of work instead of your entire state.

11. Know where the people work where you live. I work in DC but 50% of dc workers commute to VA for jobs so I target VA as well with A DC

Headline on my ad in VA:

Washington DC General contractor
Design, Build, Remodel
Additions, Kitchens, Baths

That is my ad that appears in VA so when consumers in VA see it they know i am a DC contractor and hopefully unless you live in DC you don't click it. This ad Runs any town or state that i do not work in.

11. Where do people come to your town move there from?? In DC the 3 most popular states I have found people migrate here from are NY, Philly, Boston. So I advertise nationally there.

Washington DC Contractor
Need a licensed G.C.?
R&B's Remodeling Inc

This one plants a seed in their head everyone researches online before they move to a city. If you bought a house and needs repairs before or after you move in who do you call?? R&B's Remodeling i've seen that name before.

We have also done work while the owner's where transitioning here meeting us once a week/month etc. as needed

Alright thats a good start let the questions begin

Re: Adwords Experiment

Grumpy I also think that is amazing. Heres why have in the last month.

17,167 impressions

29 clicks

$25 cost for the month

0 requests for estimates.

0 calls for estimates.

I may not have the greatest website, but I have seen much worse. Am I expecting to much. When might I expect a request for an estimate grumpy, goerge, or roary. Help this is frustrating.

Re: Adwords Experiment

They may be several reasons for your lack of requests.

Does your website give the information the customer is looking for?

DID your ad lead the right customer to your website?

Was it just a HO looking for info but not ready to buy right now?

How easy is it to request a estimate or info from your website?

Who are you targeting as your customer?

What does your ad look like??

Do you have the right market area targeted in your adwords campaign?

are you choosing the right keywords??

Re: Adwords Experiment

Ill know that really soon Doug when Mike gets done with my new site. All I could think of is my estimate button. Its a get a quote button and its not very visable. My phone number is up top though. Its very frustrating. Mike was trying to talk me out of the navigation being up top but I like the look of your site.

Mark

Your adwords are set up wrong. I keep trying to find time to make some notes for you. But there are several errors. Your better off turning them off for awhile til I get a chance to catch up to you. I am going out of town sat 22. SO I will get to it before then.

PS your website is fine don't change a thing

Re: Adwords Experiment

Mark I will give you some stuff to do. IF your comfortable make these changes yourself. if not wait. if you have any quesions post them here and i Will answer them.

1. Go in to your adwords in each campaign choose edit setting and turn off the content network option, it does not apply to us.

2. You have to many keywords you only need 10 keywords per campaign max. Kitchen contractor, bathroom contractor, remodeling contractor, general contractor, general contractors, chicago general. contractors, chicago contractor, kitchen and bath contractor, contractors in chicago, ex.

3. click on recommend a budget in the edit setting tab an use that amount it will affect how often your ad is shown. it should really be 200 dollars or more but start with the recommend amount for now

YOU keyword bids are two low they should be min. $2.00 per a word across the board

4 change your locations choose chicago in the edit campain locations area and click on the cities you want to work in do this for every campaign.

4A You don't need to put the city name in the keywords, they need to be checked in your adwords section where you target your customers and choose the right cities for you ads to display in. Google reads a searching computers ip address and determines where they are at and which ads to display based on location

do this for every campaign you have

5. you should only have 1 campaign to start out with,

I strongly recommend having 1 campaign first

A chicago contractor campaign with the words above i mentioned. get the hang off it then move to having 3 campaigns

Kitchen campaign, Bath campaign, contractor campaign

a. kitchen campaign with an ad and keywords for that
b. bathroom campaign with an ad and keywords for that
c. contractor campaign with an ad and keywords for that

A good budget is really about 200. bucks a month that should get you about 20-30 good leads a month

7. Be prepared to spend about 500-1000 bucks a month for some real progress at first after that you can tool down to about 200 bucks a month it takes awhile about 4-6 months to get the righ ads and combination of words

I typed this in a rushe i hoped i did not make to many mistakes

Re: Adwords Experiment

A note for you Chicago people, Verizon is my area hubs some of their IP's out of Chicago. This means that someone 15 miles away from me is showing up in Chicago with their IP. Not sure if this will screw with your campaigns or not! I'll try it the next time I am at my mothers house (20 miles away), her IP is a Chicago one, not sure what ads Google shows her.

Re: Adwords Experiment

It does affect the google search Doug.

The same here in DC alot of the IP address are out of Virginia at the hub. Some are as far away as alabama.

You have to run a national campaign with the right keywords for that, with very specific keywords, for non local ip hubs and out of state people who are thinking of moving to your area.

But if you search alot through google. google learns!!!!!!!!!

Reston VA is one, unless 116 people in Reston want me to move back to VA and install windows for them.

Speaking of Google, people are finally figuring out why their stats program is free <--search for it on the seo forums.

Re: Adwords Experiment

I have had a website for 7-8 years and used adwords for 5-6 years it took awhile to figure out.

I did aloooott of research but it paid off. My site got 13k hits through organic searches and 30k through other referral sites and about 30 through google, yahoo etc not bad. I rank 1-3 for the top 4 most searched terms inmy area for contractor/remodelers I love it

Not bad for a dumb contractor
