Is 600 Pics Too Much For Website?
i got the basic shell of my site up.... please give some feed back
I'm in the process of sorting through over 3000 pics over the last 7 years and have narrowed down to 600. i resized all of them to 1024x768 and got all under 150MB. there are 2 main catagory's... finish work: trim, tile, paint, drywall, etc and general contracting: bath's, basements, kitchens, additions, etc. and some specific jobs have 10 to 15 pics of different angles or the progress of the job... i tried eliminating more, but i like the ones I'm down to, just sounds like alot of pics!! i dread having to write descriptions for each one ... i hope to have them up by next weekend.so, is it what it is? the more the merrier? or is it too much? |

Re: Is 600 Pics Too Much For Website?
You can do it, BUT it needs to be organized big time.
For instance Master Baths - maybe one page of before & afters of say 5 different types from basic to high end - link at the bottom for more baths (then depending on how many you can differentiate between basic, luxury or have up to 10 or 20 on that page). How about all those progress pics - on the before & afters you can have them click on it or use a link to go to more from XYZ job. Kitchens - same deal, etc... Now you can take 1 house that was completely redone or built & highlight the stages - Excavation, Framing ... with either the pic or a link directing them to a page of the other pics directly related to this Just remember you only have their eye for a few seconds to sell them - you don't want to overwhelm them. |

600 too much?
Think about it a little, how many remodel pictures of another persons house would you want to look at? I stop after about 10 or 12. I think that's average.

there are never to many images as long as you use them right and they dont get in the way or slow things down

Re: Is 600 Pics Too Much For Website?
Personally, I think 600 pics is way too many. I do not know a single person that would sift through that many pics and then you risk having the best ones skipped. If you absolutely must use that many pics, you should create folders and make sure the best ones are at the front of the slideshow for each folder.
Good luck!

Re: Is 600 Pics Too Much For Website?
I don't think it's the number of pics that makes a difference--it's the number of pics of the same project.
Pick the best 5-10 of each that show not only the overall sense of the project but also the details you want them to see. And I would optimize them down to 800 pixels or so for faster loading and less bandwidth. I think the more you have the better---as long as they're organized well and aren't redundant.

Little advice World - post them all to Flickr. You'll need to pay for the pro account to do that many but it'll be worth it. Uploading is easy, backups automatic, searching, comments, viewing metrics, and the bandwidth is free to view from your site and you'll get more eyes on them from the millions browsing the flickr site. I wouldn't recommend anything else.

Re: Is 600 Pics Too Much For Website?
You can use all 600. Most people have too few pictures in my opinion.
If two pictures show the same thing I'd remove the duplicates, organize them into categories (or projects) so that a reasonable number are on a page, show them as thumbnails and allow the visitor to view them in detail using something like highslide. Don't forget to add captions. Describe why each photo is significant, what difficulties you had, problems you solved etc. You want to make is very easy for someone to see your work without a lot of clicks and not have to look through 600 pictures to see if they want to hire you. You also might want to adjust the color level of the photos. It is pretty simple, search for 'photo color correction software'. Last edited by karunnt; 04-07-2009 at 03:12 PM. |

Just make sure you have a descriptive link to what is on each page of pictures, and you can even sub-divide that.
Like I did for this informative series. http://www.albertsroofing.com/Window%20Flashing.htm This link gets lots of traffic, and plenty of comments or leads each week.

Re: Is 600 Pics Too Much For Website?
I forgot to add. New digital cameras will allow you to take 'web' pictures as small as .2 megabits. Take two sets at a time if necessary, large magepixil for print and low res for web. Or, like me, use 2-3 cameras.
All mine are 640-480 and great for web, lousy for print.

Re: Is 600 Pics Too Much For Website?
My opinion: 600 is just too much guy. I would never look at that many pics on any site no matter the product. If you organize and subdivide into different projects then that makes it easier, batches of up to 25 possibly. Although if you make too many categories then again... nobody wants to keep going from category to category.
If you have a great selection of pictures, I would post the ones which people have found most useful in the past; your most popular types of projects, and a few that establish your credibility and show off your true abilities. If you want to post your whole collection online, think about posting to a site like Flickr and linking to that collection from your site. Just a suggestion. Hey... you're lucky you have that many pictures, I wish I had your problem! |
