Re: 10 Step Selling Method
We follow a few simple rules.
PreQual customer. Set Appointment. Be on time. Meet and Greet. Build Repore. Find out customers' "Pain". Demonstrate products that will solve problem. Fill out estimate forms. Close the Deal. Schedule Job. A formula is good to have. Sometimes we need a 10 Step Plan just for our Close.

Re: 10 Step Selling Method
OK, here's my 10 steps
1. Hire sales reps systematically, carefully, prudently 2. Treat all employees with respect; expect the same (with accountability) in return 3. Ditto for current/potential clients and the community at large 4. Return calls promptly even from solicitations (I've converted more than a few to sales!) 5. Blog, involve yourself in your community, support associations, without worrying about 'getting business' (it will come). 6. Deliver more than expected to current clients, with respect and where possible fun. 7. Respect your clients and prospects time -- if you are going to call cold, be sure you are offering something more than just another 'offer'. 8. Recognize the power of relationships, especially within the supply chain, and position yourself accordingly. 9. Respect privacy, (I will be courteous with business callers during business hours, but never knock on my home door to sell anything, ever!) 10. Have fun. If it's a grind, find something else to do (or get someone else to do it who enjoys it.) |

Re: 10 Step Selling Method
That kind of motivation I can do without. Reminds me of why I don't want to be someone else's employee. Life is just too short.

I would agree that it is not the best to start out with. Looks like it fit the situation though.

Re: 10 Step Selling Method
This thread can take us in interesting directions if we dig a bit deeper. Turns out the video clip posted by A.W. Davis above is from the 1992 movie Glengarry Glenn Ross. The low budget film was not a commercial success, but otherwise high-paid actors volunteered to take major pay cuts for the opportunity to participate in the film. No high pressure required for them to 'act' the roles. I've posted my observations here.
I sense that WPC0804 and I are at the opposite ends of the ideological divide on sales and marketing practices -- but we probably are not that far apart in terms of effectiveness, which raises other interesting questions. If both "in your face" cold door to door canvassing and the apparently softer relationship building, patient approaches work quite well, is one model right and the other wrong? I continue to believe that, for a truly sustainable business, you've got to get it right so that your clients really want to work with you more, and refer other customers your way, and that is the best way to go long-term, for the majority of businesses. This includes, of course, consulting services for door-to-door canvassing. Does WPC0804 find most of his new commercial consulting business by door-to-door canvassing, or by building on the referral/relationship marketing model? (And do we find some of our important business by systematic cold calling? Sure.) |

Re: 10 Step Selling Method
Please do not misunderstand me Phil, I belive in in any form of marketing that can be successful at a reasonable cost. Any type of marketing can work if you have enough money to waste.
I believe in what you say about refferal marketing. Who doesn't? I just do not think that this is all you have to do. Some folks that think Door to Door is all about sales. I have knocked on many of doors over the years, and I don't remember ever selling anything at the door. It is my belief that if you have a good product and a good company to stand behind it, then you should tell everyone about it. This includes: Door knockers, bussiness cards, post cards, letters,T-shirts, job signs, internet, and many others including canvassing. |
