Your Favorite Job.
This is mine:
The Gulf Oil Building in Houston, Texas, circa 1930 ![]() This was the tallest building in Houston until the mid sixties, and at one time had a neon-lit revolving "Gulf" sign on it that made it look like a huge gasoline pump. In the early 1980s we stripped it down to it's concrete core and rebuilt it. It is memorable to me because my foreman at the time was a laborer during it's initial construction. It is PIP concrete, and this man and his associates carried each bag of cement up stairs where it was mixed and poured. Can you imagine carrying 94# bags of cement up 30+ flights of stairs?! The other memorable thing about the job was the elevator controls. Basically, there was a scale model of the building in the elevator control room, and the switching was done on that model to control the banks of elevators using leaf switches and mechanical logic circuits. It made a hell of a clacking and sparking as it worked. What is your coolest job? |
