They are around, just seem to be hiding out more now, but cheers to the good ones!

Here's a few lines from the emails from the customer to me who started this thread as we were finalizing the project. I highlighted the parts that I think make a good customer stand out.

She suggested (darn I can’t remember her name) a random “dot” pattern (which is described as a small tile that fits in the diamonds in a random manner) and it looked really good. She said she knew what to tell you re: the pattern, tile, etc.

I realize this may change the costs…call it a change order and we’re ok.

I sent the signed contract and $$$ to you a couple days ago….you should have it today.

This will be really good! I'm so excited!

Okay, that's all, I think we are ready to rock and roll whenever you are!

Re: You Gotta Love Customers Like This

I had one of those this summer. Almost verbatim to your e-mails. I can't cut and paste all the "awesomes" and "amazings" and "no problems" - it would take me all day. And the $50 bottle of wine was very, very good. The single best client I have ever worked for. Towards the end of the job, I went off the clock, so to speak, and just did all sorts of extra detail stuff.

Re: You Gotta Love Customers Like This

Okay, I'll post this one, since it came into my inbox one minute ago. From client above.

yay!

i'm so glad you liked the wine - i got some advice on it since i'm a creature of habit and always get the same thing... and i couldn't give my lame cheap Val as a gift!

everything looks cool with the invoice, and i'll send you a cheque this weekend for sure - we are SO happy with the work, you have no idea.

i'll also send along a testimonial letter which you can deploy as necessary, and i guarantee you'll hear from us again if/when we need work done when we move.

thanks again, and give your terrific crew a hug from us.

This is the part that customers don't understand.

A good craftsman who is treated with respect and feels appreciated by a client will bend over backwards for that customer. You brow beat somebody, stand over their shoulders and nit pic them and try to 'get your money's worth' and everybody is only looking to get done and away from you as fast as possible.

The customer who puts out a cooler with ice and sodas or comes up to you on a Friday around noon and hands you a $100 bill and tells you to buy lunch for the crew is going to get that $100 back 10 fold without a doubt from everyone on their job.

Clients like that unfortunately are few and far between, but when we come across one like that, we make sure to take care of them. It's amazing, a little appreciation and the freebies abound. Yet, if a client wants to look over the shoulder of my crew and question everything, they'll get a change order for every little item. A little thanks goes a long way.

Re: You Gotta Love Customers Like This

When I got to my job site this morning,I found a note on my mini-vac.

"Everything looks great, here's a list of some inside projects for you this winter if you have the time.
We are looking forward to the new siding in the spring so keep us in your schedule."

When I left for the day, they're house was cleaner than when I arrived.I even swept up the whole garage where the windows were stored in one corner.
Lucky to get two or three of these a year.
