Re: Yikes!!! Hey USP45!

hey tinner, wassup?
dont recognize it, we do have rattlers, copperheads, and water moccasins here. Its definitely not a moccasin, they are reddish brown color, almost like a worm, could be a rattler, wish i could see the tail. I dont know of a rattler that spreads its hood though. I will find out though

Re: Yikes!!! Hey USP45!

Tail was only about an inch long. Fat body guy. Raised up like a cobra. I finally decided to shoot it instead of catch it. No fangs I could find. I left the head intact. A neighbor said he had seen 2 in 40 years and called them a 'Puff-Adder' and he said it was reputed to be harmless.

Re: Yikes!!! Hey USP45!

just dont shoot the black snakes, commonly called a rat snake. These are pure black in color and TOTALLY harmless. They have been reported to kill and eat poisonous snakes. I catch them and put them in my yard.

I have a friend who has made a career out of living in the woods, hunting and fishing, he will be over tomorrow. he should know for sure. Better safe than sorry!

Re: Yikes!!! Hey USP45!

My guess would be that's a baby copperhead by the clearish-yellow tail.

Could be.

I generally catch snakes and let them loose on the property.

I just went through this step-by-step online snake ID thing, and I still come up with copperhead.

I caught 7 snakes in Richmond and released them in Green Bay last month. Browns and Garters.

I have seen baby moccasins, they are a copper color, this thing he is talking about resembles the adder. hard to tell as I am not an out doorsman, but I never recall a moccasin puffing its head.

Above I posted a pix of a adder, looks sort of like the one he saw.

Copperhead doesn't do this. Neither does Cootn mouth. And Cotton is a laid back snake until hurt. Can often pick them up without hassle.

Now, a watersanke will bite every time. They're mean!

We have a 5-6' brown water snake under our camper at White Tail Resort. Know what he is too. Have a pic of him somewhere too.
