Wood Patio Cover

Hi Everyone....

I need your help in estimating the material on my patio cover.
I have been bugging my husband to build one. Since business tends
to slow down around the holidays..I thought it would be the perfect
time to get hubby to finally do the patio cover for the back yard.

So I measured the space. It's about 37 x12 . The problem I'm
having is the rafters.. what is the math to figuer out how many
rafters do I need to purchase. My husband told me it goes every
18". I want to do the math and figuer all of the lumber I will need.
Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Your rafters sit 24 OC (on center). If it's 12 feet out from the house and you intend to frame as lean to, you'll need 20 rafters.

Don't forget, you'll need a continuous board of the same material as the rafter secured well and running along the house that the tops of the rafter attaches to. We call this a ledger.

If your husband is stuck on 18OC I suggest he go to 19" 3/16 (there's a small diamond on the tape to represent this) Then go to 3/4 ply to beef it up.....Mighty costly for the ply however.

Send me some more info and I'll try to help you out. Be prepared, the Moderators may ask you to skip over to the sister site, DIY.
