Wide Plank Floors
I am like a fart in a skillet I will tell you.
This is for my own kitchen. First I wanted porcelain, so many to choose from, sooo many ugly ones (why do they all look like some kind of slate?) Now I am back leaning towards wood, makes sense the rest of the house is straight grain Fir. I think I know what I want, the question is where to get it from and if anyone else has bought or installed such product. I am leaning towards a rough sawn pub, farm house type flooring. If anyone can point me in the right direction so I can hound dog it, I really would be thankfull!! |

Re: Wide Plank Floors
You're in northern Indiana?
There should be scads of Amish planing mills near you, both in IA and MI. Just a thought. Not sure if they'd have fir, though. When I was in MI, I dealt with these people: http://www.woodworkersshoppe.com/ and also this guy: http://www.woodhavenlog.com/ I always preferred the second guy, but I'm not sure if he has flooring. Call both places to check and tell them Ben Kaminski sent you Last edited by True North; 11-24-2008 at 08:52 PM. Reason: added some links |

Re: Wide Plank Floors
Hey, Im doing a very rustic fir floor in my new house. 1600 feet of 5/4 cabing flooring. I will pass on some info. First of all, like you im sure, I have run miles of flooring for other folks homes, only did the finish on a couple. Most of what I have run is pre finished and everything from cheapo 2buck a square to 8 a square for some nice hand scraped stuff. I was looking to save some money so I bought this old knarly cabin flooring. Full of knot holes, splits, pitch ect. I started trying to cull out the really bad stuff and realized it was all really bad. Every piece needed biscuit joints on the ends, and I cut three 3/16 grooves down the back to get them to lay flat. I spent a ton of time, and I am still not done. What I have got down looks great, goes with the lodge look I am going for. But, It would of been cheaper to buy a quality flooring. Here on the west coast there are some companys selling wide plank pine or reclaimed wide plank fir but it goes around 5 to 7 a sq. I think if a guy had the time, he could have pine or fir milled and then run it through a moulder planer. Would be cheaper than buying from these bigger outfits..

Re: Wide Plank Floors
We have done two jobs using rustic wide plank from carslise flooring it is all salvaged wood. They also manufacture there own type of antique face nails they look like straight cuts witha little flair. I would use them again if the need arose.

Re: Wide Plank Floors
They've such good deals, I go there to buy one thing and come back with 15. Like this one:
Itauba, Tapajos Teak, Select Grade Take Entire Lot Size: 3/4" x 5" x 1' - 10' $3.50 per sq. ft. Quantity: 1958 sq. ft. Total: $6853.00 Thing is, you have to buy the entire lot unless you can swing a deal with the owner. Last edited by Cdat; 11-25-2008 at 04:14 AM. |

I've used rare earth hardwoods about a dozen times over the past year.. Their products, and service are excellent.

Re: Wide Plank Floors
Rare Earth impressed me when they stopped what they were doing to assist a little old lady who was looking for an 18 inch wide by 2 foot piece of pine to cover something up. They could of made her wait forever to fill my order but the sales guy just went out to the mill cut her a piece and gave it to her for free. Treating her very respectfully and nice the entire time.

Re: Wide Plank Floors
Just happened across a bunch of 4/4 sawn Ash, all wide boards 8' to 10' in length. I think I have a start to my floor.
