Who Uses A Coil Framing Nailer?

I'm looking for another framing nailer and was considering a coil nailer instead of the traditional stick nailer. What do you guys prefer? I have always used the stick nailers, but I like the more compact design of the coil type.

We used to have an "old" big Bostich coil nailer.
Less reloading, nice for floor/roof sheathing, wall sheathing when building on the deck. Especially compared to plastic colated clips at 25 nails+/- per clip

It was a bit big and and got heavy with spikes overhead or between framing.

Re: Who Uses A Coil Framing Nailer?

pros and cons both ways. I've always preferred the sticks.

smaller boxes, can pack them into my bags without damaging the nails, and I can reload a stick nailer in a second and be right back nailing.

coils take awhile longer, but not bad. One thing to watch for is the grabber on the coiler tends to wear after awhile.

much the same with anything, it'll wear.

OOOOhh, that new Hitachi looks really sweet! Best part is it uses the thinner siding nails as well as the framing nails. Gotta find an extra $400 somewhere.....

Depends what you're doing. If you are shooting sheathing or subfloor then use coil 'cos you have more nails between changes. If you are running everything on a remodel job and you are likely to need a mix of 2 and 3 inch nails, then use a stick.

Of course to pull this off you need to own both....

Re: Who Uses A Coil Framing Nailer?

I have a Bostich stick nailer. Coil nails are cheaper than stick. Ever since I got my Paslode cordless stick I never use the Bostich anymore. It's too much of a pain loading the compressor and hoses, making sure there's 240 volt power, getting tangled up in trusses, etc. and the paslode is lighter. It's just one orange case to replace all that other stuff. Just have to make sure it's cleaned regularly.

The paslode doesnt seem to have the power of a air gun.

Re: Who Uses A Coil Framing Nailer?

Generally speaking, I haven't had any problems setting the nails. Sometimes it was just a matter of adjusting the depth setting. It doesn't have the speed of pneumatic for something like sheathing but for framing I like it, except for nailing up lams but then again I've worked with some compressors where you were only good for a few nails before you had to go back and pound them in manually. Oh ya, they suck sometimes working outside in winter but I've learned to store the fuel cell inside my overalls. That doesn't always work though.

I hate how slow they are, I dont have one for that reason but I have borrowed one for smaller jobs. I will probably get one some day. I was shooting nails into some pine 2x8s probably from the 40s and the paslode would leave them 1/4-1/2" out. The air gun would run most of them in but I was using a 6gal compressor so sometimes I would have to let it catch up.

Re: Who Uses A Coil Framing Nailer?

I was just remembering putting together 3 truss girders for a home about 5 years ago. The spec on nailing per ft was something like 12 per ft per side and the compressor supplied was a pancake makita. What a pain in the butt. I could only go about 3 ft then either wait for full charge again or continue and go back and pound 'em in. The hillarious thing is I spent hours doing this and they all ended up in the bin because the truss designer screwed up royally. After 3 flatbeds of trusses coming then going, the truss supplier still had to send their own crew to mod the 4th batch on site. I have no idea what arrangement was made to cover our costs not to mention the crane that always had to be there.
