Who Else Works Wierd Hours?
It's 9:16 PM and I'm skating off from some painting that's going to take me till midnight. It's right next door so I can sneak home for a coffee break. Who else ever gets caught up in these late night jobs?

Re: Who Else Works Wierd Hours?
I'll be the bad dog this time. During my apprenticeship, I finished painting a lady's house, and said I would lay the tile also.
320 sq. ft. First time. I know I played "handyman" . I started at 9 or 10 A.M. on the last day there and was there all night till about 8 or 9 the next morning . No more late nights for me .

Re: Who Else Works Wierd Hours?
I do work for several businesses (restaurant, bars, retail, etc) that are only closed at night, and many projects require me to work after 8:00pm or 9:00pm. A couple bars I do work for I start at 2:00am and have to be done by 9:30am
I don't mind the schedule, after 20+ years in the fire service, wierd hours are natural. And my clients appreciate that and are more than willing to pay the premium price to have me there when they are closed so I don't interrupt their business. so it works out for both of us, and now that summer is here it gives me a few days now and then to relax and enjoy the weather during the day when everyone else is working.

Re: Who Else Works Wierd Hours?
I work wierd hours for construction... 8:15 8:30 ish to about 3:30. I do this because our daycare closes at 4:00 and I have to pick up my daughter. But I schedule a lot of estimates in the evening and I also do paperwork and crap like that in the evening.

Re: Who Else Works Wierd Hours?
I stay at home until about 11:00 am to take care of my 4 year old little boy, then ma-ma gets home from her school bus driving morning route. So, I wind up working from 11:00 am through at least 10:00 pm every night.
This gives me the afternoons to do measurements and the early evenings to have appointments and then the later evening hours to do estimate calculations and pre-write ups for my secretary to do the final write up the following day. My boy i still awake when I get home too, so we have alot of time together, and I really appreciate that more than anythig else. Ed |

Re: Who Else Works Wierd Hours?
It took till 1:30 AM to finish the painting, then I went up there at 7 AM to do a clean up. Arrived to another customer's place at 10:30 to do some garage repairs till about 8:30. Now I can get some real sleep, have a small project (oak bed rail for an elderly customer) to do tomorrow, finally to get back to regular hours by Monday. Well, until next weekend. I heard somewhere that people relax on weekends. The must have a real job.

Re: Who Else Works Wierd Hours?
I don't do it anymore but here's a couple
DDI in Ft Laud. during BCC yrs. building and reno'ing bars. "We never close a bar that we like" 1:30AM-9:30AM. We built The Sandbar, The Button, The Student Prince, Crazy Gregg's, The Parrot and many of the lesser knowns. Working for Dad reno'ing old downtown Ft. Laud. 8AM to 10-11-12PM. Long days but good money. My takehome was $485 (average), beat the pants off of a paper route and allowed me to leave home at 16.

Re: Who Else Works Wierd Hours?
I've worked weird hours in the past, but not because I liked it or thought it was a good idea. Other than accomodating some personal situation (daycare) or accomodating a business's operating hours, many long days and weird hours are due to a lack or planning on the part of the contractor.
I know that it's common for certain commercial subcontractors to work night hours, just so they can have the run of the place. Flooring, tilesetters, and painters come to mind as being some trades who will commonly work at night on a commercial job. |

Re: Who Else Works Wierd Hours?
All I know are weird hours, After 25 years in restaurant management, and now doing restaurant building repair, I work a lot of late nights, and early mornings. The bars are the tough ones, starting at 1:00 or 2:00. Most times I can get started by 11:00.
From a business point of view it's great money, I dont show up for less than 700.00 a night, and most times it's a couple a days in a row ave. 1200.00 a night. It's kinda strange, day hours are usealy high material cost low labor, and nights are high labor low materials. |

Re: Who Else Works Wierd Hours?
I also do work at a bar. I come in as they're closing, and wrap things up when they open for business at noon the next day. It's a bit strange working those hours but it would be nearly impossible to work in a bar while they open for business.
"Sorry, honey... the jukebox, tv's, and lights over by the pool tables will be down for the next 6 hours. But the lottery and hot dogs machines are up and running!" |

Re: Who Else Works Wierd Hours?
I build residential specs now. Normal hours. Back when we did commercial remodel we did some long hours, some late hours, some early hours. We did whatever the job dictated.

Re: Who Else Works Wierd Hours?
I don't mind the wierd hours so much, but working solo during those wierd hours kinda sux. It's like I'm stuck working while everyone else gets to play. I think the last one will be just that - the last. I have nothing but normal jobs on the horizon and I think I'm going to cut out side jobs as well. But then, I've said all this befor.
