That would depend on where you live. For example: NH does not have a construction licensing structure of any kind.

Different states, have different terms, titles, and definitions for many things.

One difference may be this:

1.) GC license: Allows you to work commerical, industrial, on buildings & multi-unit structures over certain size Cubic Feet, along with residential.

2.) Residential License: Allows you to only work on residential projects (no commercial, no industrial), limits work to 2 family size structures, no larger, limits in Cubic feet size.
