Question

What Are We

i have been working in construction for 30 years, in my own buisness for 25 years. i am still not sure what i am,

1- contractor
2- builder
3- developer
4- carpenter
5- sub contractor
6- designer

what word would you use to describe your proffession, and why.

ps, now with the new countertop buisness, i think i might be a manfacturer

NONE OF THE ABOVE. Pick up a copy of E-MYTH by M. GERBER, but after 25 years it maybe too late

Re: What Are We

people aren't comfortable unless they know which slot you belong in. some slots have such negative connotations, such as "real estate developer". Around here, this is very bad amongst the sod busters. "Contractor" has no meaning whatsoever, but it is the leading description of tradespeople. Try to figure out what people are comfortable with. Often, when they learn of all your talents, they are more likely to just think you are a flake or a master of none.

Re: What Are We

Deck Builder.

One of these days, I'll be able to put "Master" in front of that.

You're right, "contractor" is too vague to have any real meaning.

Re: What Are We

I suppose design/build contractor would be the best description for me
yes contractor is too vague
Emyth is a good read for sure, but is by no means the bible by which to make a living
