What Is This Stuff & How Do You Hang On It?

I have one marketing customer that has me hang banners at credit unions. I have been running into this problem lately at the new branches where the exterior walls seem to be made of a foamboard covered over with stucco or kind of plaster texture? My anchors are pretty useless in this stuff. I am afraid to use toggle bolts because what if they rip out a large hole under stress & how would you patch it?
I have also had to deal with some paper thin columns that also seem to be a plaster over very thin fiberglass. All I can do is cement an anchor in and come back later. Some of my out of town jobs make that difficult. Someone please fill me in on the construction of this crap?

First description sounds like Dryvit. Not sure of an answer for you.

Google EIFS and you'll find tons of info on it. Dryvit is one brand of it.

Synthetic stucco is applied over a fiberglass mesh which is applied over the foam.
Has it's benefits and it's liabilities.
On the downside you can not patch the stuff. The entire wall surface needs to be re coated to get it to look worth a damn.
If I was you I would not penetrate a synthetic stucco wall to hang a banner.
That's just me though

Thanks Duke,
This is how Dryvit says to anchor into their walls:

http://www.dryvit.com/fileshare/doc/...on/ds504_6.pdf

Only practical if a stud is handy (& detectable). The stuff I am dealing with doesn't appear to have plywood (or any kind of wood) behind it? If it does, it must be awfully thin?

Here is one man's take on potential problem with Dryvit:

Good luck, I see a lot of that
going over DenseArmor, or whatever
drywall sheathing is called.
I'd think you'd need to fasten
a 1X, or some such, to the studs
then hang from that?

Re: What Is This Stuff & How Do You Hang On It?

Thanks guys for the info.
I have learned that I have most likely voided EIFS's warranty & that a strong wind will most definitely rip the anchor from the wall. Also, patching this stuff is very difficult. In my case, I would have to locate metal studs to anchor into & they will never be where the customer happens to want the banners?
Oh well, gotta think this one through.

That's why I said to fasten something
like a 1X hanging rail, or maybe
some sort of picture frame deal
if they have a standardized size
for these things.
I know......in your dreams....

Neo,
In my case it is usually eyebolts to hold 3x10 banners. Not looking good for me, I'm sure.

Eyebolts in the parapet area - generally the back side - where the plywood is, bottom ropes wrapped around a column or something similar if available

Re: What Is This Stuff & How Do You Hang On It?

The objective is to securely hang some banner (size?) in a somewhat permanent location, right?
I'd take a hole saw maybe an inch or two in diameter and core out the foam or acousitc material away, and then anchor directly to the concrete or drywall as usual. save the core "plugs" somewhere on location to patch if things need to be moved...

I'm talking about fastening a horizontal
(12' ?) 1X that he can then screw, bolt,
whatever, into.
Ideally one placed 3 or 4' above the other
to fasten the top and bottom.

Re: What Is This Stuff & How Do You Hang On It?

If there is plywood behind it, it won't be there for long. I've seen a bunch of buildings with a Dryvit system that have completely disintegrated because of moisture trapped behind the Tyvek. The styrofoam seems to have been the culprit. My insurance company won't insure an EIFS system.

Do you read any of the prior posts?
He seems to be saying there
is nothing there except studs.
Puke doesn't tell me why a ledger
is a bad idea.
Care to elaborate?

Re: What Is This Stuff & How Do You Hang On It?

I personally don't like the Idea of a "ledger" acrossed a clean surface, (if it's not clean then use what's there) as I mentioned I would tap into whats behind the "foam & stucco". Their HAS to be SOMETHING providing backing like plywood..., BUT, if not then use a large toggle or molly (with large washers) to catch the stucco's wire mesh. make sure you add some silicone behind the washer to keep moisture out.

Neo's solution may not be all that pretty unless you paint it with butterflies, but it's structurally sound.

Yours isn't.

In other words, you have a solution
as long as you ignore the conditions
that stp57 says he is dealing with.
Cool.
