What A Day..
After lunch, my day took a turn for the worse.... I had to chew out/ crack the whip on ,my painters employees today.. They seem to be slacking a whole hell of alot when the boss leaves.. today's lunch was only 1 hr 45 minutes.. They are slacking big time. I have the home owner asking me why the painters' "guys" are always taking a break..
Fair to say we are having a sit down with the painting contractor in the A.M.Friday we had the insulation blown in from the outside. In the contract the guys were supposed to remove the cedar claps, drill through the sheathing, them re-install the claps.. Well, they show up, and start drilling holes right through the clap.... After calling the owner/ boss, he apologized and said they would make it right. They ended up doing a hack install of the new claps, and cracking the claps above the repairs. My father/partner didnt inspect the final product, and paid them (stupid mistake). I called them back today to fix the cracked clapboards...you could cut the tension in the air with a knife.. The insulation guys were HEATED because they had to , god forbid, "do the job right"!! When I walked over to talk to one of the employees, he got pissy. Telling me he shouldnt have to fix it because we already paid them, and my father didnt say anything to them on friday. Also he says "its called wood, and it cracks" I guess all the house's they work on they crack/leave the siding.... Not on my job... fix it! Anyway, i had to stand near my truck to make sure they didnt accidentaly dent it on the way out.. A big FU to the unsulation company... Why is it so damn hard for people to do a job right? I mean c'mon, they cracked them, they should fix them... even if they were annoyed, they shouldnt have had the attitude they did... Oh yea, they even used my new cedar clapboard to repair there **** up...I should send them a bill for the $1.35 per foot of materials.. that alone probably cost me $100.00 Sorry for the rant

The insulation guys need to chill. They are only piss'd because they have to do something twice. I can relate to that.

Every once in awhile, you just have to be an a-hole and that's that. Nothing wrong with what you did. I did it last week and then ranted here. Not many really care about the quality anymore, but I would have told the insulators, they will have to PAY for the repairs, not DO the repairs. Man, insulators are just about the bottom of the rung most of the time, no offense to any insulators here.

What I really hate is that those subs are a direct reflection on you. I'm always really embarrassed when one of my subs does something really stupid or breaks something. Even though I know as soon as I let them know they will come and make good on it, its just that surprise call at 5pm from the homeowner, "hey _________ stepped all over my wifes new flowers"

I let him go FAST, but do you have ANY idea how much trouble it was to please her and get paid after that??????? I almost had to dust her ceiling to get paid! Yea do employees and subs just not think????? I can never say enough times watch the F word when your standing infront of an open window and mrs oldperson is sitting at the kitchen table drinking her coffee. Or when a sub has a valid point about a better way of doing a job and says to me right infront of the homeowner "you know if i do it this way it will be just as good and it wont cost you as much"

Re: What A Day..
I have a better one,
Last week the painters started on the exterior of a house we are rehabing in the west end of town..pretty damn good job and fast really moving along..they took for lunch were gone an hour then came back. np Later that afternoon the home owner came home I was at another job about 20minutes away when I get a call from HO to please come over he had some issues with the painters.first thought was they got caught doing something or nothing. Any how when I got there I was informed that he had seen these painters at lunch at one of the local watering holes here and he didn't appreciate me hiring these type of people.Bottom line after confronting them I had to let them go.... I firmly beleive that while your at work whether your an insulator, laborer, journeyman etc.. you need to put your best face on and act like a professional. BTW I am using those painters again on a different job with the stipulation that if I catch them drinking they'l be fired again with no future of working for me again. it has seemed to sunk in..

Re: What A Day..
today, I had a guy "sneak off to take a leak"
I looked to see where he was going to do it... NEXT TO THE HOUSE & IN FRONT OF A WINDOW ... what the hell? I was baffled & whistled, in the van & check on blah blah, meaning gatorade bottle... ray

Re: What A Day..
I've noticed that the best workers are the ones who own a home themselves. Think about it... If you've always lived in an apartment, you have absolutely NO IDEA what things cost, how long it takes to make your house a home, and are clueless about the concept of pride of ownership.
I have made it a point to only hire workers with families and their own homes, and they get it! Unfortunately for us, being business owners, we want our workers to represent our company and to work as diligently as we do. The vast majority of these people are usually business owners themselves.... and competitors! |
