West Virginia Mountains

Has anyone out there ever built in West Virginia in the middle of winter? If so can you over some advice and heads up on what to exspect. I am a good ol southern boy and I have always built in the Carolinas.

Re: West Virginia Mountains

WV is a pretty state. People are still friendly there. Everything still moves just a little slower in WV. Get the trans on you vehicle checked before you hit WV, the hills (but to mountains to me) are rough on the tranny. I have never built there, the friends I have there live in a trailer that is stuck on the side of a hill (on the brink of being a mountain). From the last I heard good labor was hard to find in good WV.
Good Luck

Yeah, I have heard the same thing about sub's in the WV area. I will be contracting out most of my work to sub's I have used in the Carolinas. Thanks for the reply

Re: West Virginia Mountains

I'm curious how you can compete when building with out of state subs? Resi or commercial?

Re: West Virginia Mountains

It is a res project, but all custom work, and it is single and multi family construction. You pay a little bit more per sq ft, but if you use subs you know (and know what they can do) you can stay on your project schedule and it can actually save you money.

I'm sorry, I couldn't resist. The only work I have had in West Virginia was a long time ago when I played music at a Country Club in Beckley. The club was situated on a mountain side and property was well secured with tall fences. The owners of the local mines lived on that mountain side also within the confines of tall fences and an armed guard at the gate. When finally getting into town, we asked where this place was and nobody seemed to know. Come to find out, they knew, but there was so much hatred for the mine owners, they wouldn't pass on any info.
I was in a pretty depressed area that was not overly friendly, especially when they found out I was a northern musician playing music for the rich folk. I'll never forget though, when one of these owners offered to buy me a drink at their club. I was served a full bottle of Dewars, a bucket of ice, a pitcher of water and a glass. It was mine to do what I saw fit with.
The houses on that mountain side were their second homes and made the White House look like a suburban dwelling.
That doesn't answer your question, but I thought I'd share...

The dynamite things right on the money, expect to hit rock, and I mean ROCK. There's a lot of it there, the good stuff, like granite. Then after work expect to fight at the local watering hole.

Yeah, that's excactly what happened. We were at an American Legion across the street from the motel we were staying. This guy, I mean 7' tall and 400 lbs, puts me in a headlock and says..."I don't like you much" I'm calling out to the keyboard player, Bennie, who himself is a pretty significant sized guy, a part time Mafia collector, and he is at a loss for words of wisdom or anything else.
I got out alive, apparently.
Those boys down there wear a meausring tape on the left side and a .38 on their right.

Sometimes I wish Texas, California and NYC would just secede and get it over with.

Man, I have to get my family out to Texas one of these years. I have heard a lot of good things about Texas, mostly bias opinions.

I'm really thinking about moving down to the Dallas area. I do not like the northern jersey winters. It really screws up my income. It got to be nice to never have to worry about the weather when you have to work outside!

It's kind of funny really. The last few days have been in the mid seventies with lows in the mid fifties...I find myself getting bummed out with Mondays weather forecast to be a high in the mid to upper 50's

I do remember working outside in Mass. The last year I was working a winter I swore I would never do it again...So far I have held the promise!

Of course summers get hot as hell, but in reality I will take the heat over the cold any day.

Look at Austin if your not locked in...so nice in the hill country!!
