after some time off from blowing my back out, i am finally able to work again. granted it takes a pain pill and muscle relaxer in the morning and again at lunch to make the day, i am able to do what needs to be done.
i am no longer self employed. i found that i ended up always over doing it physically because i could not keep help around due to their stupidity. the number one stupidity problem was drugs. the second was they were lazy. i would end up setting a gang of upper cabs by myself and that was never good for my back. or i was lifting beams, walls, etc. that i should never have attempted by myself, but did due to the fact that it needed to get done. i seemed to always find a good guy and then loose him to his wanting to go into the business himself. i paid well, but couldn't offer much as far as benefits. they figure they could do better working for themselves. i can't blame them i did the same when i was younger.
i am employed by a larger company as a full carpenter in the maintenance sp? department. i have several helpers and i have full benefits. sure the pay isn't near the same as when i was out on my own, but the work isn't as hard or stressful. i still get to do all the carpentry i want and then some.
last week i formed for a couple small slabs, hung some tin, build some stairs stringers, wrecked forms and got them ready for another project. i also layed out two bathrooms which i framed the first of the week. i am off today for a a surgery. when i get back i will insulate and skin the walls with osb (they are in a industry shop where the rest of the walls are skinned with osb.
so far, things are going well. i haven't worked an 8 hour day and punched a clock in a long time. the norm was always 12 hours work, then estimates, and materials and then sleep being the boss for myself. when i leave work now it stays and i get to play the rest of the day. what a difference it is.
