Website Critique Please

Hi Guys. By now most of you know me.
My youngest son, Noah, has been diligently writing me a new web site. It has only taken him 2 years. Apparently all-you can-eat fajitas on Mondays, all-you-can eat wings On Tuesdays, and all-you-can-eat ribs on Wednesdays has slowed him down, not to mention interactive gaming with his friends on the other nights.
He has some type of super-fast computer with twin screens that he built himself (it started out as a Dell, but I think the only Dell piece left is the box), and he has 3 years of computer geekness training at college, so he knows what he's doing.
So, here's the thing. (I hope I've got the right category in the forum)
I would be grateful if you guys would look over my new site (some of it is not quite finished), compare it to the old, and let me know what you think.

Old site : www.fenceanddeck.ca

new site: www.fenceanddeck.ca/flashSM/

Thanks
Steve

The old site looks good. The new site can't be found.

Actually, he's not a drinker. He might have the occaisional beer, but fortunately none of my sons drink, smoke, do drugs or abuse women. Their only real vice (all 3 of them) is fast Mustangs.
Mine too, for that matter!

Don't know why the new site doesn't come up. Sorry to waste your time.

There are some who will argue that search engines are not particularly optimized for flash. You may want to have Noah give you the staright skinny on that as most young bucks want to put in all the bells and whistles without thinking of, or knowing the consequences.

BTW, don't let him give you this "I don't smoke, drink, or play with women thing. Everyone has a vice. He may be young enough that you need to know what it is.

No, he's a good driver.

we have a new law (about a year old), that if you get caught doing 50KM (30 miles) over the limit, you are "stunting" or "racing". At the officer's sole discrestion, they can impound your car for 7 days, take away your driver's licence for 30 days, and impose a minimum $2000 fine. All of this at the roadside.
No such thing as innocent until proven guilty. If you go to court and win, your licence is re-instated, although there is a mandatory $150 charge to do so, and the towing and storage fees (easily $1000 or more) are up to you. The government doesn't refund them.

Re: Website Critique Please

Although the site isn't found, I'm guessing from the link that the new site is done in Flash. Never, ever, ever have a site built in Flash unless you want to disappear from Google and search engines forever. They can't and don't get indexed, and a site built in Flash will be the kiss of death for you.

Re: Website Critique Please

Mike, I see you mentioning the same thing on Flash. That isn't just some who thing, it is fact. Flash won't get indexed, period.

I know you are just being helpful but I read a post from Google to the contrary. It is almost a year old and Google's Matt Cutts has addressed the issue more recently.

Re: Website Critique Please

Not just trying to be helpful. I own an SEO firm, speak at SEO conferences across the country and I know Matt Cutts personally. Flash = kiss of death. Google would like to improve their ability to index Flash, but if you show me one Flash site that ranks for any worthwhile keyword, it will be the first.

Honestly, I know so little about SEO, SEM and anything else related to internet marketing that I hesitated to even post anything about it. I just read something from Google that was contrary to what was posted. I was not familiar with your companies before today and there aren't a whole lot of painters that are experts in search. To tell you the truth, I don't think I have ever met anyone that worked at Google, let alone Mr. Cutts.

We're just little old subcontractors down here trying to keep up with today's young whippersnappers. Congratulations on being so accomplished in the industry of search.

Good luck and thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience with us contractors.

Re: Website Critique Please

If you want to use flash, go for it, but it cant be the only thing on the site.

You can have a part that is flash, but the site still needs to have a ton of HTML and HTML links and HTML landing pages, a site map, and meta tags.

anyway, it is a moot point, since I got a 404...

yeah, i can post links now, prepare for silly videos links...

Re: Website Critique Please

Thanks, didn't mean to come across too strong, it's just that a Flash site is SEO 101 on what not to do. I get a little passionate about that kind of thing.

Valencourt makes a good point. There is nothing wrong with a Flash image or banner on the site, and that sometimes livens up a page. But guessing from the URL, I'm thinking this whole site was built in Flash, which would be a disaster for him. Limit Flash use to only small areas on an actual HTML page that is strong in all other areas of SEO and you will be ok.

Re: Website Critique Please
