The vinyl doesn't care, sometimes the installers do. We install year round.

The installer must of wanted some time off to go sking? The cracks can be filled with latex caulking.

Vinyl siding can be installed year round.

I have a feeling its going to look bad regardless of when he puts the siding on. Don't forget you start at the bottom and go up

No, start at the top so your top is always a full piece! Face nailing 84 1/8" on center is key.

Re: VINYL SIDING-is This True?

MXIM, The most important factor is if the installer is comfortable working in the weather. If it is to hot or cold sometimes the end product looks rushed. I have a standing policy that my company will not work if the heat index is over 100 or the wind chill puts the temp in the teens. Our average winter temp is in the 30's (?) so taking a day off a week on average is ok if the crews feel that it is to cold. When it gets really cold caulking does not flow, window flashing tape doesn't stick, air lines get rigid, fingers begin to hurt...............not worth working. Vinyl siding can crack if you miss a nail, this would most likely be caused by a installer who is freezing. If it means anything, I am going to change my vinyl siding this winter.

IMHO MXIM is doing this job himself. He was asking how to put up a starter strip yesterday. He is also the same guy that cant decide if he is a tile installer or a roofer, or apparently now a sider, or just a DIYer feelin brave

I hope someone told him to use the correct color starter strips, those tan color ones show through just like using the wrong color mortor for marble. Did anyone tell him why F-channel is better around doors and windows rather than using J-channel?

Hes probably gonna use F channel for the soffits too like a framer. Hey Doug, We have implemented that trim system I talked to you about a couple months ago no visible J, Easily replaceable components, looks like real wood trim. Ill put some pics together for you, you might want to use it on your house.

Hey guys dont forget to hang all of your vinyl first before soffit and fascia, leave a 5/8" gap for your soffit at the top. forget about f-channel when you set your soffit on top nail to the outside put your coil on then when you are in the house wind kicks up you get that nice winded soffit sound as it flaps around.

Hey now! I resent that! We don't put those in at all. We just temp 'er up with strapping and let you guys put the j or f channel in later when you get to it.

Patrick,as much as you like to abuse me you seem like a nice guy and a very knowlegable one as well. Doug, same goes for you. thansk for the info.
so i guess the only problem is when its too cold and an installer misses a nail, the vinyl is more likely to crack when its very col opposed to a more normal temp?

Thats what your supposed to do, the secret is a piece of aluminum L bend above that 5/8" gap

Not bein' one to abuse anybody (unless, of course, you were to enter the politics section ), - - yes, it's more likely to crack, - - and also, - - when it's warmer out, the siding and coilstock are already in their (temperature-driven) 'expanded' position.
