Vehicle Confession Time

How many of you drive way more truck then you need? How many will admit it?

How many will admit why.

I have secretly encrypted this post so no wives can ever view it and use it against us.

Re: Vehicle Confession Time

I would say that 90% of the time my F 350 is more truck than I need but it is the 10% of the time that if I had a F 150 I would have destroyed it with the load I put in it. I just wish that when I was using it as just a driver it got better than 10 miles to a gallon. I have thought a couple of times about getting a ranger for the days I do not need such a truck, but I just know the day I was driving that one of the guys would call and say since you are near the lumberyard, could you bring us a pallet of quickcrete, and I would end up loading it up and busting something, so I drive the 1 ton everywhere I go.

Re: Vehicle Confession Time

I hear that. I see a 4 cylinder ranger in our future as a 2nd truck. Of course a couple of instances of crap, we could have done this or that if we had the real truck with us and there goes the ranger.

Re: Vehicle Confession Time

Now that I spend almost all day in my truck I sometimes wish I had something a little smaller for the estimates. But I like my diesel and even if I still had my old ranger I dont think I would drive it.

I would love to have a dodge durango with a diesel motor. That would be cool.

Re: Vehicle Confession Time

I agree with ARCS, I also have a 3500 Chev which I only need 10% of the time, but anything less than that and I destroy them with the loads I can carry. My wife is okay with that, you can send her the post.

Re: Vehicle Confession Time

Have a 2000 chevy 1500 long bed w/v6. I kill it with a heavy load every now and then but the main thing is the milage. I got the v6 for better milage and it sucks city driving in tampa from job to job is around 11 mpg had the best I have ever gotten is 19.5 mpg one highway trip. Track the milage every fill up always the same.I will have a v8 next time maybe diesel, probably a 2500hd but not a 3500 has to be a long bed maybe an extended but a crew long bed it too long. Was hoping that jeep was going to build their fullsize truck this year but it's shelved. It was to have a turbo 4 cyl. diesel and get 22 mpg with decint power. But on the up note my chevy is running strong at 118,000

Re: Vehicle Confession Time

I have a Duramax, and it is well justified, due to the loads I am pulling every week. If not, I would have a smaller truck for sure...and since the diesel gets 17 and up per gallon, it is my personal truck too...signage is good advertising when you pull up at a restaurant or where ever.

My Tundra is just enough for my needs. Pulls the trailer and hauls small loads. Long things I put in the trailer. So I think I am just about right. No need for a bigger one here.

I bought a loaded Sierra Z-71. I don't think I actually need heated leather seats in a work truck, but I like them.

Yes, with the price of gas, it might be time to downgrade from the old Pontiac T-1000. I'm thinking more along the lines of a pedi-cab.

Honestly, though, I have vehicles that nobody's even turned a key in for a month, and that's a sin.

I drive a Ford E-250 van and it is a waste of money when I'm not using it for work. But hey, for work is why I bought it. The 2006 comes stock with the v8 unlike earlier models where u actually had a choice of a 6 cylinder.

Re: Vehicle Confession Time

I'm driving an '06 GMC Canyon and I wish I would have bought a full size. 80% of the time, it fits just right. But its the other 20% that makes me wish I would have went bigger. I have a nice ARC cap w/boxes that work real nice.

Its also my daily driver. Plus I also serve as an officer for our local volunteer ambulance, so I carry some gear as well as have my two-way radio installed. Oh yeah, its got some flashy-blinkies too, but they're concealed.

We've got a 2006 GM 1500 w/ the V6
Holy S*&T have I overloaded that thing a few times

It's got the power to do everything we need it just lacks 4wd and I feel like some of those leaf springs are going to just snap when I go over a speed bump with 2,000lb on the back

Re: Vehicle Confession Time

We have an older 14' Box truck that we now just park and use when we really need it. (Less gas and repairs)
I drive a '01 Dodge Ram 2500. It is Packed with tools and ladders that I don't use on a regular basis. I have no choice tho. One of our areas of work is to do heavier maintenance (what the staff can't do or don't want to do) for about 8 investment-owned large complexes. We get "emergency" calls on a weekly/daily basis for: "sudden" broken doors, broken windows, plumbing leak damage, roofing issues, etc...
I always end up being the guy to go out, since everyone else is scheduled to be at a project.
Many times I have no idea what I am gowing out to accomplish, until I get there. So sometimes I need tools and materials for metal work, concrete work, wood, exterior, roofing, etc...(having the right tools and materials in the truck has saved me so many times especially, if I am at the call late).
Examples: At a door break-in till 9:00 pm last Thursday. At a call for "noise" in wall yesterday (unsecured hot H2O plumbing lines expanding and contracting)

Result is:
one year: 24K miles on it.
Gas mileage = + $ (company pays for it all).

(needs a re-organizing)

Re: Vehicle Confession Time

I use a new '95 F-150 at 13mpg for most thing now. I still use the '82 Ole' Yaller for the heavy lifting at 9mpg. Here's a pic of Ole' Yaller with 3 tons of crusher-run in it.
When I called the quarry, the lady said $15.00 a ton, or $10.00 per PU load. I crossed the scales at 13,983.
She looked at the numbers, then the truck and nearly busted a gut! She said "Yep, that's a PU load! $10.00 please."

The wife drove it a few times to pick up loads there. Once, the manager saw the loader with a full 10" bucket dumping a load in the truck and came across the lot screaming for him to 'Stop, Stop, Stop!"
We've picked up 40-50 loads like this.
