Union Rules

Are you following what is happening over at Orange County Choppers? They are building their World Headquarters and using below Union Wage workers.

Big F'ing Deal.

While you've got your panties in a bunch, it should be noted that none of the mechanics building choppers for OCC are union either...

It is not about being Union, it is about payng a fair wage. They set up a sudo company and hired low wage contractors. Fine when you are doing residential work, but these guys are making millions. It is common that commercial work is done at the Prevaling Wage. Just as it is common that when doing government work, you must be paid prevailing wage.

I would bet that his sons as well as the other couple of workers are getting a nice paycheck, so why make the guys building your empire scrape the bottom?

First off, the correct spelling is pseudo. Secondly, do you adjust your prices based on your customers personal income?

Nobody working on that job is a slave, they are all guys who are happy to do the work for the wage they've negotiated. These non union workers do the same exact job that the union workers do, so why would someone pay more when they get the same job?

Re: Union Rules

LOL, I noticed Digger edited out most of his original post. Contractor Talk is famous for that, it usually goes like this:

1. OP makes a post.
2. People respond and critique original post.
3. The OP goes back and removes the material others responded to.
4. The result is a watered down original post and seemingly off topic responses.

I've even had mods on this board edit my posts after the OP has edited theirs so that even the language I quoted in my reply was gone.

Two different animals.

Private money: hire whom ever you like
Public Money: Davis-Bacon *may* apply (Dollar value of project and other factors apply).

Re: Union Rules

I think if you check this out you will find that Paul Sr. owns the company that is doing the steel work. Orange County iron works was the parent company of the chopper business that was Paul Sr.'s hobby. I wouldn't be surprised if they are GC'ing the job themselves.

Re: Union Rules

I know it's probably a bummer for the union workers who hoped to benefit from this construction. On the other hand, a guy has the freedom to hire whoever he wants to for his construction. Indeed, there are legal ways to be double breasted if you want what you perceive may be a benefit from non-union labor. The union's sense of "entitlement" to certain work is getting a little old.

The company doing the structural steel is union, and owned by Paul Teutl, I would say the other trades have a legitimate bitch with this job.

So? It's pretty normal in my area to see union and non-union subs on the same job all the time.

Here it is a different story, if the job is union, it is all union, or paid at the prevailing wage, if not, the unions will either picket it or refuse to work on the job.

If you do not like what they are doing, do not buy a bike from them and do not watch his show.

Your could also boycott everyone that has had a bike made for them. - That could get embarassing and/or interesting.

I agree 100%, I'm not bashing union or saying union bad, I'm just saying I think unions as a whole are a bunch zealots stuck in a time warp with thier heads up their ass.

Maybe you need to pull your head out of your ass and wipe the **** out of your eyes. Think about what your trade makes in union scale. It's all about collective bargining with contractor associations. As in strength in numbers. Non union contractors are too busy cutting each others throats to do anything to help one another out.

Re: Union Rules

Just a reminder, the democratic party instituted and passed legislation that formed unionized labor and set up the labor laws we have today. Those who are accepting of a free market society shouldn't complain when an individually owned corporation chooses whom they sign a contract with.

If you're against socialized medicine shouldn't you also be against socialized employment?

Some truth to that.

But on a more serious note - who the hell is with me that Orange County Chopper motorcycles are choppers with themed doo dads welded on them? I'm sorry but those bikes suck ass.

Let's make a NASA bike! Yeah cool, lets cut out some space shuttles and stick them on the wheels! Lets make a golf bike! Yeah, cut me out some little golf clubs and lets weld them to the bike! Whooo wee we are cool!

How the hell those guys were able to become millionaires is beyond me.
