Trust Yer Gut Feeling

Last fall I got a call from a sparky I know, tells me to come out and look at a job. I get there, the guy is an old GC, needs a roof put on his dream home that he and wifey are building. It's some type of steel panel roofing that looks like cedar shingles and comes in sheets. I've never done it before and tell him this. He says not to worry, it'll come with instructions.

He's got a bunch of other stuff to do including a whole lot of timber work which is my forte and is very attractive.

I spend some time looking the place over and chatting to the guy. It's about 11am and he offers me a beer, which I refuse, and has one himself. I tell him I'll think it over and get back to him.

I sleep on it for a couple days and then call him back and tell him I'm not interested. The timber work was really calling to me but my gut said "don't get involved with this guy".

Anyhow, months have passed and the sparky just dropped by... The guy and his wife broke up, they lost the house, the property, and he's trying to save the rv so he has somewhere to live, my sparky, and everyone else, has a lien on the property, with little chance of seeing anything.

Sorry for the novel, just a reminder to Trust Your Gut!!!

Good call on trusting your gut. Bad call on refusing the beer.

If you drink enough beer, you will also have a bigger gut to trust next time!

Re: Trust Yer Gut Feeling

thanks for that. i have been looking at a job that my gut was skwirmy on. is skwirmy a real word? i really wanted the job cause it is in a highly affluent area, that will have high traffic as the guy hosts a lot of people. i was looking at doing all the cabinet/build-in work, door/window trim and other millwork. the money would have been great, the potential for others to see my work would have been great, but and this is the kicker. this guy is a nightmare customer. i have to give this guy an answer this weekend, and i believe i am going to pass on him.

Someone has said it around here before: "you can't lose money on jobs you don't take" or something like that. Now go have a beer and work on that gut!!!
