lol, yeah, with a 4ft pole. My question is (in a Mike Holmes Voice and attitude) Where the hell is the fill? How much would of it cost to fill it before they poured the concrete. Were not Heros, but we make it right.

Re: Today's Estimate Pics (not For The Weak Stomachs)

I see what appears to be furing strips and some concrete nails for initial support ? could they have been pre fabbed slabs ? Its apparent it must of leaked real well.
Hope no one was sitting on that park bench thats now below.

A porch accident in some parts of Arkansas is seen as more of a tragedy than in others.

You know how many good dogs you can lose with one porch collapse?

Re: Today's Estimate Pics (not For The Weak Stomachs)

It collapsed around 3am so no one was hurt. Good thing kids weren't playing ring and run that night. I think it was orinally held up at the fron by the bricks that are on an angle sticking out. then the furring strips must of been holding up the side against the house. Maybe another board went across the front wall. The front band of the house is completely rotted. The slabs look kinda thin to me.

I see potential there for a retro-medieval moat.
Could be the latest home improvement trend....

Thats a fairly common method of construction. But usually theres four inch bearing on each wall. Looks like the brick edging on three sides compromised that. Filling that hole with dirt would have caused more problems than it would solve. Look at the existing grade outside. You would need to compact it every couple inches, If it got wet and froze it could possibly push out on all the surrounding concrete block walls. Something that happens commonly around my area with small porches resulting in bulging block. They make a steel deck pan just for that kind of pour but it looks like they just used plywood. I have seen homes with doorways into that area as basement storage.

(Edit to add) Wow I saved that pic and zoomed in. It looks like absolutely no ledge at all on the building side. That should have been a 12 inch block wall to carry four inches of that slab. Looks like zero inches.

Re: Today's Estimate Pics (not For The Weak Stomachs)

wow..be carefull with that one man...I wouldn't touch it unless i could replace that band board, and reflash the whole thing first..looks like a callback nightmare waiting to happen....I would also get a moisture/mold reading in that basement, before you start.

I say hot mop it and call it a koi pond. You could build a cute little arched bridge to the front door.

Re: Today's Estimate Pics (not For The Weak Stomachs)

AW - I thought gravel should of been used for fill. I see your point with dirt being used.

They want me to price out decking instead of cement. I was thinking of replacing the front band, attaching a ledger to the new pressure treated band, and chipping away the angled brick, drilling through the block and attaching a ledger with Hilti threaded rods set in epoxy. We've used this system before and it seems to work well. I'm thinking 2x10's for the ledger this way I have more surface area for attaching. I'll make the decking flush with the brick so it will have a brick border. I'll include composite as a nice upgrade.
