Thinking About Starting A Landscape Division

Or a dba - however I would do it

This isn't the first time I've thought about it --- but I've been reluctant to do so because (at least around here) it has been so saturated with fly by nights and hacks

But, I've also noticed alot of them beginning to fade out as well, lately.

No lawn maintenance --- but construction --- retaining walls, patios, ponds, plant installs, lighting, etc.

Maybe it's the coffee talkin ...

Sounds like a good idea to me. The fly-by-nights can't fill a niche that is already filled.

Should be good for getting work that leads on to other work, as neighbours can see what you are doing, whereas if you are working inside like I do, unless the neighbours are friends as well then they aren't going to see how nice my work is

The only thing that I would be conserned with is taking focus away from what you already do well. You have probably grown profitable because of your focus. Starting something else will definately take focus away from that.

Something to think about.
I know that we got better when we started to eliminate things. We no longer do roofing or decks so that we can do more of what we do best and get better and better at it.

Most of the time i think it only makes sense to expand your business if the services you are adding complimant your currrent offerings. I belive you run a pool installtion company now. I belive adding landscape would work out nicely for you.

I'm a landscape company (hardscaping) and am getting into fiberglass pools. The main reason for me to expand is so i can become a 1 stop shop for outdoor construction. I'm looking to become a general contractor that just does out door projects. I'm look to adventually only deal with customers that are looking to do entire backyard projects in one shot. Pools, patios, decks, cabanas, outdoor kitchens etc.

Re: Thinking About Starting A Landscape Division

We have a landscape division, it's the lawn maint. commercial snow removal, and hardscape areas primarally. I've found out it's a nice foot in the door for some clients, at times it's a consistent work that helps pay the bills, and it ties us in as the all-in-one stop for someone looking for a quality contractor. We build a great deck, why not have us do the patio... mow the yard... and have us back to finish off that basement?

As long as you're not TOO local, go for it! LOL

Where ya at, btw? East is a bit vague.

yep, pools

which are great. And most clients are looking for landscaping.

Other than that, mainly it would be supplemental income

Niche's is what it's all about. If no one else is doing it, jump on it! If you have competition, you may want to assess your position and abilities. Service will always deliver $. Can you?

I sorta thought that landscaping work might be a way to keep an excavating contractor's small equipment (like mini excavators and bobcats) busy and help that sort of equipment pay for itslef when it might have otherwise been idle.
