Is There Really A Market For This Stuff?

And to think I have to pay every time I bring the trailer to the dump. Take a look at the stuff they're selling here.

Patrick, we must throw away a few hundred thousand in doors and windows a year! There use to be a place in Westwood that sold old doors for silly prices like those. Maybe I should try to sell my garbage?

Do you think I could put those hundreds of thousands of dollars of "high Quality" used shakes down on my tax forms as a loss?

They have "helpig hands of America" so you can donate cars....maybe someone will come up with "helping homes of America" so we can donate our trash, I mean are good building materials? If web-sites like that set the prices then our garbage is worth money. I think we could at least break even and pay no taxes.

They have one near me its called ReStore they sell absolute garbage in the store and try to tell people how easy it is to install these used random sized windows in their homes. Anyways Ive called them about a couple times to see if they wanted stuff its donations only, and they were so damn picky about what they would take or not take I just said forget it going in the dumpster.

Re: Is There Really A Market For This Stuff?

There was a construction outfit near my parent's town that was putting up a building, and using 2nd hand rusted metal roofing for the siding to make the building look old. Apparently if you had any old rusted tin that matched the profile of the other tin that they had, they would buy it for $5 a square foot. My dad offered to sell them some tin, but it was the wrong profile.

I recently tore down an old building with metal roofing that had rusted, and it dawned on me that the pile of roofing that I had pulled off the roof was probalby worth $4000 if you had the right person to sell it to.

Craft people (toll painters) use those old shakes, slates, and window sashes for their work. They make some pretty cool country-style decorations out of them.

I GC'd a beach house a few years back on the coast of Maine. I talked the guy out of "the entire house with ceramic tile" and into a very carpenter like old barn plank floor. The floor guy came with what I call crap boards that I guarantee were not old growth barn boards. $25/sf to install

Re: Is There Really A Market For This Stuff?

a good portion of the million dollar "ranches" going up around here are built to appear like they have been standing for years. the roofs get done in bare steel, then burned with acid so that they rust really fast, other times, a new shingle or metal roof is done, then old rusted and bent tin is run over the old roof to make the house look old. floors and cabnets get beat with chains and axes to make them look abused, old thrift store boots are screwed down next to the door, and old rusted tools are scattered around to make it look like the ranch has been operating for years. brand new pavers are run through a cement mixer to chip the edges so the patio looks like it's been there a few years a few hours after the tools get rolled up. brand new siding gets painted, then lightly sandblasted to make it look like it has been there through a few winters. as we tear down these old outbuildings, we save all the old rusted junk so that it can be hung on the walls.

Sometimes it looks cool, sometimes it's a bit overdone. the old rusted roofs look like crap IMO. the rusted tools and old boots look tacky, and the distressed siding and what not often looks over done because the people that did it apply damage evenly over the entire object, rather than focusing on the places that are higher wear.

and don't get me started on the people that seem to think that the "rustic" look is an excuse for loose joints, bad cuts, and in general crappy work.
