Tell Me What You Would Do....

There is a job site about a block from my house where, the owner is having a room addition put on. Small town so everyone knows everyone or has heard of the people they don't know. The room addition is about the same size as the house. Just a guess about 25' x 50'. The adjoining wall being the 50' length. Went by today and the trusses were up. I like to have sh*t when I saw the direction they were put up. There is going to be a 50' DEAD valley!!! So standing in front of the house the roof line looks like this ^^. The dull emu... Would you say anything to the homeowner?

I wouldn't. He'll find out soon enough. If you say anything, you may be viewed as trying to step in and be the know-it-all then the whole town will view you that way. I wouldn't even drive by there. BTW, if the contractor is a hack, then everyone already knows he is a hack. You will accomplish nothing good.

Later you can say, "Oh, I didn't realize he had it done that way. Interesting."

They usually put a shallow cricket in these. I'd wait. IMO, there would be too much personal responsibility thrown out the window if everyone just said **** it, from the architect, to the building dept., to the truss designer, to the framer, to the roofer, and ultimately to the GC and HO. If no one says anything, everyone is at fault. Though a 25' run is quite a long distance for this situation.

I would expect him to have enough sense to overframe it so that valleys are formed to the meeting point of the gables/overhangs. There are always ways to achieve proper drainage, don't sell him short yet.

Re: Tell Me What You Would Do....

I dont kmow if I feel sorry for the HO or not. I had a similar client that had almost the exact same thing done to his house. When he called me and said his roof was leaking and it had always leaked. When I went out there for the estimate he told me that THREE contractors had tried to fix it including the one that installed it.

He was sure to ask me if I had GL. (Cant imagine why he would be so concerned NOW lol) When I gave him the bid he almost had a stroke and it was a very reasonable bid. I asked him how much he had invested so far and he wouldnt tell me. He called me because I was the only remodeler in Nacogdoches with GL and WC. Its a shame but its true. When I fixed it for him he was my best reference. Even went through hurricane Rita without a glitch.

Be patient, this could be your future client. He is most likely payng for what he gets.

I was thinking in lines of the master Loneframer, then I saw his pictorial answer. Man that guy has some pictures for everything.
I would guess that there will be some infill framing to come.

Give it a few days and see

Here are a few more examples of tricky areas for water diversion.

Re: Tell Me What You Would Do....

I do hope so for the clients sake. If it was drawn by a archy anything is possible I guess. Down here in where I live you see a lot of roofs built wrong. 1/12 pitch coming off an eave with three tab shingles is commonplace. Most are done by HO's but not all. My father once told me he was still waiting for the archy's to come up with a special architectual name for it because it is so common.

Nice pics Framer, is that some of your work? I used to work for a framer in NJ back in the 80's by the name of Bennington. We were building a subdivision in Coopersburg PA. I am Texas proud but I have to say a lot of my learning came from yankee carps in your area.

I still cant call a barge rafter a chicken ladder though.

Yep, I framed them all, thanks. Funny, I've heard them called "chicken ladders", but I refer to them as "show" or "fly" rafters. "Rakes" if there is no overhang.

Y'know, houses like that just drive me nuts. They're pretty, no doubt about it.

But I live on the side of a mountain, in the middle of an oak forest. Every time I see all those nooks & crannies, all I can think of is the maintenance hassle when all of the tree detritus lodges there, composts itself and begins growing plants and trees where they have no business being.

I guess it's just a cross I have to bear.

As long as I can get a pic before the trees start growing, I can live with the roof lines. I just hope someone has a job clearing that stuff. I like to call it "fine art restoration"

"If you don't have anything good to say don't say nothing at all." is what my Mom always told me. Had a similar situation next door to me where the builder built a three car two story finished garage on a 3.5" slab over the top of the grass, drilled the sill(SYP) halfway through to recess the anchors below the surface, and most every nail I heard them put in the siding was a ghost. Guess I'd keep mum, job security. And like others have posted there may be another ridge going between the two soon.

My favorite is when a 2' section of gutter is used to handle 10 sq of roof area in the dead valley.

Re: Tell Me What You Would Do....

Yes, stop by. I've found that asking questions is the best way. Ask the HO if he's considered the problem of water. Tell the contractor you were anxious to see how he was going to finish it off. When you see someone making a mistake, you have a moral respondsibility to speak up, but in a diplomatic way, not as a "know-it-all". It may be that the HO never thought about this. You wiull benefit in the long run because that person will remember and appreciate you and mention it to another HO later.

If the roof is going to look bad I'd stop in and offer them some beautiful landscaping to balance out the hideous roof.
