Is This Stupid Or Genius?

There's a lawn sign I drive by every day for a painting company. It says

PAINTING
FREE PAINT
FREE ESTIMATES
416 555 ----

I can just imagine the quality of the paint and the upselling once the guy gets his foot in the door.

On the other hand maybe this is a great marketing scheme
What do you think?

Its misleading at the very least. But when I bid a job, I give them 1 lump sum. They don't know what the materials cost versus the labor. So as far as they know, the paint could be free.

I guess it's a door opening pitch, but it just smacks of sleezy to me.

Wow! I think it's totally stupid. I wouldn't want the kind of customers that it's going to bring on. JMHO

I think I'd consider calling him (or her) and asking them how they do it.

That's not a terrible idea, is it?

Just call him and ask for the paint. Demand that he gives you free paint. After all he is advertising it and if he does not say with purchase you might have a leg to stand on.

I would not consider it a 'genius' marketing scheme, but maybe the guy wants to appeal to suckers who are 'stupid'.

Re: Is This Stupid Or Genius?

I do more lurking than typing here but this reminded me of something.
A siding company was advertising free storm windows with every siding purchace. A man I knew had them out for an estimate just out of
curiosity. After the salesman made his presentation my friend told him he'd just take the free storm windows. Of course the saleman said he couldn't do that, but did tell my friend if he didn't want the windows he'd take a couple thousand off the siding cost.
