Steel Building Forum.?

Are there any plans to have a forum for steel buildings..? There seems to be an interest from a few forum members for this arena. There could be discusions about manufacturers, foundation work, erection, insulation, etc. Comments..?

Steel? Yep, there's a lot of it in the common building!

Re: Steel Building Forum.?

Since I have been researching this topic, I would be interested in a forum on it.

Re: Steel Building Forum.?

A steel construction forum is a good idea.

How about forums for heavy construction?

Bridge construction?

Road construction?

Pipeline?

Construction surveying?

Maybe on a new site Nathan...

Right, how hard is it to bolt together a life sized erector set, anyhow? Big freaking deal.

I'm always open to ideas and if there is enough interest I'd consider it. However, this site covers so many topics that it's hard to have a topic for every one. Instead we try to be more general. We have a concrete forum, an insulations forum, a construction forum, and a steel forum. Seems like it's already covered in some ways but what do I know.

Re: Steel Building Forum.?

By the way guys, I hope none of you took offense at my above post...over half of my business is erecting steel buildings, and commercial projects.

I sometimes wonder why we even bother to break out sub categories, since when I come online, I read everything that is new. I don't break posts down by category, nor do I look at the category on the right side when I scroll down.

I personally do not like all the sub catogories. It takes longer to go from section to section!

(AP) President Bush on Wednesday signed a whopping $286.4 billion transportation bill that lawmakers lined with plenty of cash for some 6,000 pet projects back home.

With fanfare, Mr. Bush signed the more than 1,000-page highway bill into law at a plant operated by Caterpillar Inc., which makes road-building equipment...

Nathan,
Heavy construction is an entirely different market. It would probably require a different site, with different sponsors. The equipment costs for a heavy construction contractor can run into millions of dollars.

Also, heavy construction guys (being idiots) probably wouldn't mix very well in the forums with small residential contractors and handymen.

Maybe you don't have the time, but right now there isn't a good heavy construction forum on the web that I know of.

Of course not, after 30 years in the business it was really no surprise at all.

I was talking about a steel building forum when I said "if there is enough interest". I have looked into a heavy construction forum in the past and tried to figure out how to add it to this site. The closest we've come is our Commercial Construction forum.

Sorry I didn't spot it. I've been too busy to spend much time on the forums lately.

Looks good so far, I hope it pays off for you.

Re: Steel Building Forum.?

Steel buildings erection is an important part of a steel building projects. The steel building supplier is not responsible for the erection of the steel building system, the supply of tools or equipment, or any other field work required. The supplier does not provide any field supervision for the erection of the structure or perform any inspections of the steel building system before or after the erection.
Steel building erectors usually erect the steel building system according to their standard procedures unless otherwise stated on the contract documents. Most steel building erectors only get involved in the actual erection of the building. They do not get involved in any finish work such as electrical, trim work, plumbing, or any other work that may be necessary to complete the building. Steel building erectors are usually responsible for the following:
Tools and Equipment: The erector is usually responsible for providing all of the tools and equipment necessary for unloading and erecting the building safely and properly. Some standard and non-standard components and accessories of a steel building system.
Electric Power and Compressed Air: At the time of erection most buildings do not yet have electricity. The erector is responsible for providing electricity and compressed air needed to power tools and equipment. The compressed air and electric power required for steel building system erection.
Insulation and Insulation Accessories: The erector is usually responsible for any insulation and insulation accessories to be assembled in conjunction with the exterior wall and roof of the steel building system.
Experienced steel building erectors may be booked months in advance during the busiest seasons, so it is wise to secure one as soon as you know the delivery date for your building. The Armstrong Build Team can help you schedule your erector. Your specific erection manual will contain a complete list of all necessary tools and equipment. It will also contain step by step instructions and diagrams, showing you exactly what to do first, and how to proceed for easy assembly.
Complete erection manuals come with every Armstrong Steel Building. Each plan is prepared specially for that individual building and should be followed exactly.

Re: Steel Building Forum.?

I would agree with "BoydS"!

There is of course a growing awareness about building Steel Houses and its advantages over building wooden houses. However, there is too little information or discussions on the internet on that topic. I would also love to see a forum specifically on Steel Structures or Steel Buildings using materials like Red Iron and Light Gauge Steel.

JimCarter,

Try this link to Modern Steel Construction magazine:

Or this link to the AISC:

Hope that helps.

Best regards,
Michael
