Starting A Business Need Help

I recently was asked by neighbors to construct a deck for them after they saw mine. I am going to get insurance so I can obtain the permit. Should I form a llc?

Alright Greg, leave the poor guy alone. He knows not what he does.

dvatt, you don't start a business just to get a permit. You don't start a business just to build a neighbor's deck. You start a business to provide a service or product to your target market AND TO MAKE MONEY.

You don't need to be a business to build a deck. Get the HO to pull the permit and buy the pizza and beer. You help him build his deck. If it falls down, you sit and drink the beer, eat the pizza, and talk about the good old days.

Geez. Why make life so complicated?

If this is a serious thread, you are gonna need more than insurance to pull a permit.
Maybe a business license?
Maybe a contractor's license, depending where you are, can't tell because
you didn't put your location!!!

I'm just kidding, there are many reasons to start a business, but your's doesn't sound like one to me.

You should help your neighbor build his deck though. Just make sure you have inspections if they are required, I've seen the best of neighbors become enemies over less than a bad construction deal!
