spec house burned up

We just had a fire here of a massive spec house ($2.8mil ) when we got there it was 90% gone. Still under construction. Man that is going to be one huge mess to sort out with all the subs as to how far they had gotten on there work. I will bet everyone somehow was WAY ahead of the curve and had all kinds of work already finished. Sure, yeah we had all those rooms all rocked out, mudded, sanded, & taped. Yeah ready for paint, that's the ticket!

I builder I used to work with had 3... I think... houses burn down. His insurance company would not insure him anymore unless he had fire sprinklers (like in comercial buildings) installed right after the framing was done. I dont think I would buy a 2.8 mil house without fire sprinklers in it. I think it is now a requirement in "hillside" areas around here to have them put in on new houses.

Now they are looking into the possibility of "eco-terrorists" (A stupid word- someone who puts a bag containg an explosive device in the middle of a crowd of people shopping is a terrorist.
someone who sets off a car bomb next to people who are going into their house of worship is a terrorist. Some asshat who sets an empty house on fire is a #@@$$head and an arsonist.) anyway I said it wrong it was supposed to be $3.5M. I was thinking gives everyone a chance to do over all the stuff they screwed up

I've been on 2 residential jobs over the past several years in which they had a "rent-a-cop" type guy on the job overnight. I thought it might be to secure the material, but I suppose that vandalism and arson might have also been the reason. I know that it's pretty typical to have an overnight and over weekend security gaurd on most bigger commercial jobs. Not that it does any good. I had some gang boxes stolen off a 3rd story roof once.

I don't think that a fire on a resi job would be too big of a calamity. Nothing like making profit twice on the same job. No sales expenses on that 2nd job either.

Yeeeesh! 3rd story?! A good friend of mine had his 500lb welder stolen from a new building, 4 stories up and there were no stairs installed yet either Only someone with a crane could've taken it.

There was actualy less left then it appears in the picture. Why do these people built these mcmansions of 6000+ S/F without sprinklers? especially in an area without hydrants? this would have not helped here. But damn, spend $15,000 on a stove but the cost of a res sprinkler system is to much? it is estimated at 1.00 to 1.50 a SF
NFPA Journal®, January/February 2003
"Why don't more homes have fire sprinkler systems?
Residential fire sprinkler systems could be one of the greatest modern ironies. While the benefits of installing such systems seem obvious to fire protection professionals, many homeowners, builders, and fire officials are only aware of the myths surrounding them.

They think sprinklers will create an "industrial" look or that they're expensive. Most homeowners aren't aware that 8 of every 10 fire deaths occur in the home or that installing smoke detectors and residential sprinklers can reduce the risk of a fire-related death by 82 percent."
