Sore Bloody Fingertips

Hi
My first post and it's an odd one. My fingers are so dry and callused that when I grip something tight the skin splits wide open. I've been wearing rubber gloves when I finish drywall and set tile but they aren't practical to wear all of the time. I've tried a bunch of different creams and lotions but none seem to help them heal. I can't be the only sissy in this buisness with sensitive skin. So please help before I cut the first joint off of each of them.

Thanks

Can you get an appointment with a dermatologist? You might have a nutritional problem or something like that...

Re: Sore Bloody Fingertips

It is "udder" butter. The plastic gloves are most likely the problem. They make your hands sweat, which softens the skin. Wear cotton gloves.

Could you possibly be dehydrated?? For me the first sign of dehydration is cracked heels. Second is cracked hands. If you are dehydrated it can take a week or two to bring it back around.

Beer and coffee don't count as a fluid.

I had a friend that was a plasterer for years ,then got allergic reactions to the plaster. The only way for him was to get out of the trade, now he is an electrician. See a doctor, I would say and use the bag balms(utter butter) in the mean time.

That will be 5 cent please....

Re: Sore Bloody Fingertips

Bone Saw is right on, only I use Bag Balm. Problem for me has gotten worse over the years, at times I would have 6 bandaids on my fingers and was always afeared of bumping the ends on something.

What works for me is trying to keep them dry. (Wear gloves when tiling or grouting, etc.) Drinking more water. And the glove thing at night. My wife had some sugery a month ago and has been sleeping in a recliner in another room. That makes the glove thing at night a lot easier to do consistently and I see a major improvement in my hands, especially with the change in weather.

You might be having a reaction to the ingredients in the mortar and compound.

You could try some barrier cream. http://www.skin-protection.com/

I used to get rashes from painting with oil,a nd that's what my doc suggested.
