So Close Yet So Far Away...

My business has increase dramatically in the last year. I finally am starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel, yet i realize i am still a long, long way off from being where i want to be and making a decent living.

All of a sudden i have employee proablems. One of my guys has some trouble waking up in the morning. Already miss 2 days in the last 2 months. 1 more and he is gone. One hella work though.

My foremen does not like it when i tell him to do something differently then the way he is doing it. Most likely has something to do with him being 2.5 times my age older then me.

My jobs are just taking to damn long. Rain days hurt us. Most of all i am short handed.

I have too jobs going with me running one, i think we can all figure out how thats going.

But things are looking up! I met a guy thats going to start doing work for me. A guy that had his own masonry/ppol bix for 20 years but never got big and is just burnt out. Seems like the guy i need to adventually take over what i do between 8-5 pm. Order material, lay out jobs, handle customer issues, pick stuff up etc, etc.

Just my thoughts for the day. I do see that light at the end of the tunnel though!

We've all been there...

I just had to let a guy go recently.... had a bad case of "bottle fever" nearly every Monday morning....

Since labor costs are the greater part of cash flow, as well as the easiest to reduce, the temptation is always to skimp. You have to pay real money for good employees, and sometimes have to have them improve your house in lieu of actual profitable work, but in the long run, overstaffing is seldom the cause of a business failure, while understaffing certainly is.

Good for you. But watch the mistakes in your spelling and grammar. You don't want to come across as an idiot.

Two weeks?! Talk to me in 2 years, or 2 decades. A homeless drunk crackhead can show up on time for 2 weeks.

That one will be a festering time bomb. You'll be posting here sooner or later about that guy. Most likely you're giving him some slack now because you need him, plus he probably knows things you don't, plus it's just the way you are... he's getting used to it as you 'train' him like this, you'll gain experience and start to realize it's got to be your way or no way, he'll get rumpled when you start reeling in the slack little by little...

... can you guess I've been there?
