Slave To Work
Anyone else work 7 days a week this summer and forget to take a vacation like me? I'm wondering why my wife is in Cancun (right now) and I'm not~oh yeah, I remember...her mom wanted a mother/daughter trip. Thanks mom....I'll make sure I have the bank account full when she gets back though.

Re: Slave To Work
I don't take vacations... simply because I do not enjoy them. I can't relax. My wife takes the kids on vacation without me. Luckily, that's totally okay with them. I take my vacations on the couch or the front porch.

Re: Slave To Work
Between October and January I try to vacation once to twice a week. My vacations consist of a couple of hours out in the marshes duck hunting. I even bring clients out once in awhile.
You have to do something to keep you from going to crazy.

Re: Slave To Work
A holiday weekend can make a decent vacation. 1 day getting there, 1 day there and 1 day home. Pretty good!
I haven't been to the Key's since before lobster season opened. This has not been a good year for me.

Re: Slave To Work
In the last three years my boss has booked a job over every long weekend. Including this last one (thanksgiving for us Canadians). Although I don't mind too much because I'd end up going to the lake and working for my brother for peanuts anyway. Either stay home and work for good money or go to the lake and work for nothing.
I used to like my long weekends (they used to be the most time I spent away from work). Although, by the end of the second day I'd be feeling funny because I wasn't accomplishing any work. I haven't taken more than two days off in a row for five years. And the first day usually entails being on the couch watching TV in my boxers and drinking beer (basically a wasted relaxation day, eating munchies, and catching up on lost sleep). As far as taking a vacation, well I have no significant other to enjoy it with so I might as well keep working until I find her. But, like friends have told me, you'll never find her if all you do is work. I guess I should get out more and meet people besides clients... Oh well, my boring life.... |

Re: Slave To Work
I find it to be easier to vacation running my own business, I can go when I want with as little notice as I want and dont have to worry about getting fired. I try to take at least two "real" week to week & a half vacations a year. Disney, Arizona & Aruba are my next plans. I mean how many times have you guys moved things around in your schedule to fit in an asap job. Its just like that, when you need an asap vaca.

Re: Slave To Work
Last year I probably worked an extra 1000 hours (1k hrs). I was very busy and I worked most Saturdays and some Sundays. Average day was over 11 hrs, longest was 20 hrs. This year I decided I don't like money that much. I tried to keep my workday below 10 hrs and no work on Sat and Sun. Well it worked until about September. Now I am back to 10-12 hrs a day and Saturdays. I plan a vacation for August in February and it is paid for by May. I force myself to take it even if I'm in the middle of a job. The client knows about it ahead of time so there have never been any issues. It's only a week at a cottage down on the shore. And I do nothing. Just relax. Worth every minute. No business is so important that you can't take off 7 days out of 365.
Paintguy, start a separate bank account when she is on vacation and save up for one yourself . If you have to work 7 days a week and you just make ends meet you need to charge more and take more time off.

Re: Slave To Work
I hope the common denominator of all the guys here that work 24/7 365 is that they are either 23 years old or work-a-holics. Sure you gotta make hay while the sun shines, but something ain't right if you can't ever take a break because you can't afford to, can't schedule it around your customers, or you're scared your business will fall apart without you. At 40 my life is half over already, with only one go around I want to make the most of it if I can. Cheers to those of us that have figured out how to strike a comfortable balance between work and a life.

Re: Slave To Work
My wife caught me reading this last night and claims that I can not join in and complain. I am on a sailboat 2 weekends a month and flying somewhere at least every other month. I feel that I can complain since the rest of the time I am working.

Re: Slave To Work
In past years I took a week in August, 2-3 weeks at Christmas, and a week in March.
The last 2 years I had 10 days in Feb 06, a 4 day weekend in July, another in August (Woodward Ave in Detroit), and one more in Sept. That's it. More than 2 weeks, I get itchy and need to get back to work. Steve |
