SIP Panels

Guys, can you build your own SIP panels?

I know I can order them but I want to build them.

What kind of equipment would I need?

I am thinking it wont be worth the trouble but hey I probably would learn something new.

Re: SIP Panels

You can build them. SIP is a structuraly insulated panel. It's basically plywood sandwiched between some kind of insulation.

Buy 2 sheets of plywood, 1 sheet of polyiso rigid insulation board and some insulation adhesive.

Another option would to actually build a frame and buy an insulation spray rig. There are tons of types of insulations. Many roofers spray on SPF which has a good isulation value, however I would see what types of insulation most SIP manufacturers use and look into that spray equipment. Note: A portable SPF rig costs about $100,000. Plus maintenance which requires immediate clean up after use.

Re: SIP Panels

Grumpy, good info.

From what I have seen most SIP manufacturers use a thick piece of insulation board.

I wonder where I can find some at.

Re: SIP Panels

Cole they press the skins on with an industrial vacuum system. I'm not sure what type adhesives they use.

Also something to think about: Some SIP manufactures can't sell in certain areas of the country. Engineering requirements and such.

Re: SIP Panels

Good info, Bob.

I can already tell this might not be a smart idea, after all.

I would love to experiment with building my own, but its not looking good.

Try these links. Bone Saw might help you out as to what the foam is like because they make surf board blanks from the product. Also the second link is for a two part foam system used for packaging.
The general idea is to make a panel and then fill it with foam. Interesting idea.

Re: SIP Panels

And be sure to get the right spray adhesive. Your regular 3m deteriorates the foam panel. Just something I learned when building a speaker box back in the day.

Re: SIP Panels

I don't know, but here's my input anyhow...

When you come to wiring a SIP house, choose an electrician who's never wired one before. If you pick one that has ever delt with them before, the bid will be high. I've wired two in my career. I promised myself that my next bid for one will be about 1 million dollars. I hate them. A close second on the frustration scale is log homes.

Hi there,
this is a topic that has a lot of varied answers...yes you can build and use sips if you are using them as a curtain wall (non structural aplication)hanging them on a timber frame, other wise as in a structural application the panels need to have an engineers stamp on them to meet code requirements. check out this link look for the search button and type in homemade sips www.sipweb.com .. I also have some links for manufacturers of panel presses and so on if your interested.
stay curious,
Dan
