Siding Replacement And Soffets
We are replacing our vinyl siding due to hail damage. We are replacing it with Owen's Corning Reminiscence, which is suppossed to have one of the top warranties against fading. Do most replacement jobs also include replacing the soffets? Our house was built in 1991 and we have a south facing. The soffets still look like they are in good condition, but we were wondering what is underneath. Dust, bugs, possibly some sort of nests maybe? Thank you.

Re: Siding Replacement And Soffets
If installed correctly, there shouldn't be too much up there. There will be some dust. Bugs, maybe. Nests, usually you can tell by walking around the house and looking up at the soffits. You can usually see where the birds fly in (muddy or dirty looking around an opening) and most times you can "usually" see the material (grass, leaves, etc) that they build their nests out of poking out the small vent perforations or joints in the soffit where the nest is, but you won't know for sure until you actually look. Sometimes you can hear them up there too.
Is it an insurance job? That will determine whether the soffits get replaced (if you have hail damage to the soffits you probably have bigger problems that just the siding). Generally they won't replace the soffits, just the siding. If it still looks good, why replace it unless you want to change colors. Is it vinyl or aluminum? |

Re: Siding Replacement And Soffets
If a customer tells me they want siding I automatically assume they want the entire trim and everything including the soffits. They might look good now but after you get new siding, they will look real old. I say this from expeirence, of having replaced sidings and not soffits and a week later getting a call to replace the soffits.
However if installed properly originally, the siding can usually be removed and replaced with no damage to the soffits. |
