Server Is Back Up...

Sorry about that guys. The site when down for almost 30 mins. This site is on a dedicated server and this should not be happening. I'm working with my host now to figure out the issue and fix it.

Thanks for your patience.

Nathan

Re: Server Is Back Up...

NOTE FROM MY HOST:

As discussed on chat: The Apache server was down due to huge number of hits and hence exceeded maximum possible connections. We are checking if this was a DOS attack or regular traffic.

Best regards,

This is bad no matter how this comes out. Either someone is trying to attack my site... or my server is getting blown away from the traffic the site has been getting.

So, I'm either under attack or out a lot more money each month. I already pay for a rather large dedicated server <GULP>

Re: Server Is Back Up...

Best option is a DNS attack. Least ya can work with that with IP blocks and other workarounds....

If it is that your site is too popular, well thats gonna cost ya. Still it gives ya more juice selling ads and what you can charge for them.

Kualo: it was regular hits on contractortalk
Kualo: no DOS attack

I know, I know... but it still hurts. These servers ARE NOT cheap. If it turns out that I have out grown my old server that is amazing.
You are right, it is a good thing... I just need to learn how to capitalize on it better. I just like having a fun site right now and I need to start taking a more serious look at raising money from advertisers.

BTW, we are getting about 6,000 unique people on this site every day right now.

Think maybe the write up in that mag (right under Bob Vila!) had anything to do with it?

No, frankly I've only had a few sign ups from it that I know of.

Traffic has just been slowly growing (actually more of a spike) over the last few months.

Was there a CTdC trade rag write-up recently?

You might want to take a peek at your graphic files on the site and see if there are any you can minimize or get rid of or substitute. When you start getting into major traffice and are loading a 50K graphic 50,000 times a month that can really eat up band width compared to just loading text. I'm sure I'm not telling you anything you don't know, just maybe something you haven't had to think about for awhile.

READ THIS Apache is the only word you had to say. Some techie geek seen your add in the magazine bro. What they are doing is using a band width killer on your server. They last 20-30 min at a time. If this is the case your WEBHOST and or tech can take care of this temporarily. Techie geeks see you as a target on the web due to someone mentioning your site is a wealth of knowledge.

I would hold off on a new server bro.

Re: Server Is Back Up...

We tweaked some settings that were off on the server so I think we will be ok for now. But if we keep growing we will need a new server shortly.

A+Carpenter, what your talking about is a DOS (Denial of Service) attack and that was the first thing we looked at. That was not the problem. In those cases you can see a pool of IP addresses from those attacking computers hitting your site over and over again. But this was just normal traffic.

It was a spike though during peak hours and like I said we have made some adjustments to the server and should be ok for now.

Sorry for the downtime everyone.

Yes I know its sending or pinging the destination IP or server again and again with useless packets. DOS.=PING OF DEATH.
