Secure Loads At The Dump

Has anyone ever been charged for not having a secure load and challenged it.
Last Sunday I went to the dump. 450lbs of roten deck framing under 2 pcs of 4x8 osb and lattice below that. Less the 1/2 way up at the front of the trailer to the deck in the back. Lady starts telling me I need to have it covered, I tell her it is coverd with osb, lattice and a few shovels. More that 2 feet below the top of the trailer sides. Anyway she tells me next time I need a tarp, politely I say ok and proceed. Inside I ask the attendent if that load is unsecured, he says not as he sees it. But depending on the day she may of thought it was. Anyway when I left I asked why it was so expensive. Didn't tell me there was a $10 charge. I was pi**ed at the way she did this. I don't care about the money it is the principle. Has this happened to anybody else , and you went back and talked with them? I even have a photo.

Re: Secure Loads At The Dump

Our transfer station offers "1/2 off for covered loads". Same idea, but puts THEM in charge of the situation. It's a county thing. I rarely tarp a load, but they know me so I pay the fair amount. I do haul some sketchy loads sometimes... no disasters yet... that I know of.

Re: Secure Loads At The Dump

She probably told you because it's against the law to travel with an unsecured load. Doesn't matter technically if you have one 2x4 in the back of your trailer, by law it needs to be tarped.

The fines are very high if the police write you up for it.

She was probably doing you a favor since I'd bet that every person that's ever gotten a ticket on the way to HER dump said something to her that they got a ticket on the way there because they were pissed and she was the first person they saw after the cop.

Don't bitch about a $10 charge being "so expensive". The fuel surcharge on my lumber deliveries is now $20 and my dump has raised their price to $90 per ton AND added a $10 fuel surcharge.

Re: Secure Loads At The Dump

I have been turned away from Solid Waste Landfills for Non-Covered or Secured loads.

Makes no sense.

I am here..Let me unload.

Re: Secure Loads At The Dump

Loads do not have to be tarped. In fact the picture she gave me has a bungee net over the bed of a pickup bed. Only secured as to not blow out or fall out. Under normal driving conditions.
I see this lady every week, she has never said anything before. Thanks for the feed back. Sometimes I like to hear how others would deal with situations.
Thanks for the feed back. james

Yes your load needs to have a tarp . Ive had a DOT stop last 4 hours and you dont need that . Every thing in a open bed should be tarped or straped down .

Re: Secure Loads At The Dump

Washington State law requires all loads to be secured. At King County Waste Transfer Stations they have a sign posted stating that and something about the charges. It's called Maria's Law.

Re: Secure Loads At The Dump

It seems stupid, until you think about the lumber co. here in boise that lost a tji off the back of there truck. That poor woman's family. went right through her chest. I know you haven't had problems, and with that load, you shouldn't. But it only takes one idiot, and then there is a law. Here, they keep a state patrol guy at the dump most days, he gives you the ticket for unsecured load before you pay for your dump fees.

Re: Secure Loads At The Dump

The dumps I go to are the same way. I just use bungies and a blue tarp, takes me 5 minutes to cover it and everybodys happy. Diesel Bears will nail you good for an uncovered/unsecure load.

I don't know if it has change here in Michigan, but farmers used to be exempt from the tarp law. You could have a single 5 ton block of concrete in the back of the truck and it had to be tarped, but a farmer hauling a truck load of corn or beets does not need to tarp. (Ever see what a sugar beet can do to a car whindshield?)

Re: Secure Loads At The Dump

The dump's interest is because if they don't enforce it, they are aiding and abetting and will be ticketed. Just like when my trucks load at the plant. No matter what MY PO says, they will only load to legal weight. Why should they care? A&A.

The only thing allowed to come off your vehicle is feathers and water, everything else is littering and subject to fines. Pay the ten spot, quite gripping and cover your load next time.

Next time you see **** laying on the side of the road, which is pretty much everywhere, think about it and if everyone was fined $ 10.00 we might have cleaner streets

Consider yourself lucky, here it's $25 for a non tarped load.
