Safety Certification...

Hi guys and gals!!! Anybody doing commercial work for the Government??? Are you required to be "Safety Certified?"

I landed and did 6 jobs for the Province of Manitoba last year. All small jobs (perfect for the setup of our construction division). Come this New Year, new policies are in place... I've recently been awarded 2 jobs for the Province and at the first site meeting for the first job they had 6 rep's from the Province... They handed me about 300 pages of info and many documents that had to be filled out and sent to them concerning safety issues...

At this point, they don't require us to be "Safety Certified" but we have to have a Safety Program in place... Thank God we put some info together a few years back for a Federal Gov't job, and they will allow us to do these 2 small jobs for the time being (with the info I've supplied them)... But we have to develop a full blown safety program within the next Month or so (including "Safe Operating Procedures" for every task)... By next year have to be Safety Certified!!!

Anyone else going through this???

RealPurty has a version listed in the file swap section of the business forum. She is currently working on an updated one as well.

Re: Safety Certification...

Thanx for the posts guys!!! Maybe I didn't come across the way I intended??? I have all the paper work under control, pain in the ass (a lot of work to compile everything but I have access to everything I need)... It's good to have friends that work at large GC's (like PCL) and can slip the info to me !!!

Also, the Gov't offers courses to get Certified (as well as private companies who teach you and give the Gov't exam)... That too is not a problem, just a pain in the ass!!!

My question is, anyone else experiencing this (having to do all this extra work and spend money) just to be able to do your job??? Safety is important for sure, but a lot of this is over kill... Two pages on the safe use of a utility knife??? Give me a break !!!

Re: Safety Certification...

I do alot of work for the Federal Government(Naval Base and Aberdeen Proving Grounds). I have never been issued anything stating I need a saftey course for my men. I do however send all my men to certain saftey and certification courses throughout the year. For instance, I send them all to McCall once a year to be certified to drive a forklift, and 99% of getting the certification is saftey. I also send them to a saftey course on scaffolding(proper installation, working safely,etc..) through OSHA. Some if it is bullsh*t considering they've been building scaffolding thier whole lives, but it just reitterates it and looks good to my customers. I am also planning on sending my foreman to a 3 day course on "How to manage, dicate, and run a successful job safely". It's not that he isn't capable, i've never had one employee hurt or injured on the job, but again it always looks good.

Anyway, as I mentioned before I do quite a bit of work for the Federal Government and I havn't recieved anything along those lines. Maybe it's because of the courses I send them to on a regular basis, maybe they consider that my "saftey certification"...I don't know, i'll ask my project engineer next time I talk to him. I'll send my guys to any course they want, but it's on thier dime.
