Rotary Hammer

what does everybody think is the best all-around rotary hammer. The reason I ask is I'm in the market for one. My moto is if I have to rent or borrow it for three differant jobs I go out and buy one (don't tell the wife). I definately like Bosch But don't know which model I'm leaning towards the 1 1/8" SDS. can be used for light Demo (tile and whatnot). Any oppinions?

The bulldog from Bosch is a really good one. Good for rotary drilling and light demo work

Hilti TE76 ATC, they last forever. I burned up three Bosch's in five years, I've had my Hilti for eight years now, and have never had it serviced.

Re: Rotary Hammer

I had a Hilti TE17 for 15 years, it was replaced with a Bosch sds I forget the model, it has been going strong for the last few years and I admit it gets abused often. I also have the bulldog but before it had the hammer only selector switch, it's a great hammer drill.

Great thread. I was gonna start one similiar to this one last week. I am also in the market for a rotary hammer drill. Seems like the Hilti is currently in the lead.

My Hilti TE74 is over 15 years old, replaced the switch 6 years ago and the cord about 3 years ago. Not a single service needed, Hilti has now informed me that they no longer carry parts for it so if it goes, I buy a new one.
I core 6" holes with this thing (handheld) not too many others have bragging rights like that

Re: Rotary Hammer

I have the Bosch Model 11245EVS for about 5 years and so far I have had great luck with it, but I don't use it every day as some do. I use up to 1 1/2" carbide bits and 2 1/2" core bits with no problem, the drill itself can handle up to 2" carbide and 6" core bits.

That's the model I was looking at Mike. Have you used it as a light demo hammer yet? And, if so, how did it work out?

Yeah, it looks like Hilti is the favorite. Why is it, when I google Hilti all the sites are in another language?

Re: Rotary Hammer

I use the Milwaukee 5321-21 for most things. Spline drive.

SDS is for light duty stuff, and SDS-Max is about the same "heavy duti-ness" as Spline Drive.

Hilti may give you credit if you trade it in for an upgrade to the TE-76, they did it for my boss when his twenty seven year old Hilti TE-22 finally bit the dust.

Re: Rotary Hammer

Hilti cannot be beat, I can drill 1/2" and 3/4" holes for drop - ins all day with one hand, smooth action and their drill bits are nothing short of awesome.

On the other hand, I do use the Bosch demo hammer for chipping out and such, but only because someone stole my Hilti and I could not afford to replace it at the time.

Re: Rotary Hammer

I have a couple of bosch rotary hammer drills. One is a smaller model and I have another that is a heavier duty model. They both work great for what and when I need them. I don't think any bosch will give you problems. I don't use mine everyday but when I do, no problemos. I choose bosch because of the price and good quality you get for the tool. If I were to use these type of tools for everyday use, I would go with a Hilti. They have the best internals of ANY tool on the market. All of the guts are made of very high quality metals, where other may use plastic and lead to early failure. The only downside is the price...ouch. But if this tool is your bread and butter, go with the hilti. I have a buddy that is a hilti rep and he tells me all about hilti and why they are so good. As you can see, these guys that have had hilti, have had them for 10 or more years. I am personally a bosch guy and love my hammer drills but I think Hilti wins this one as far as the hammer drills.
