Replacing Trim On Laminate Back Splash
I need to replace damaged, missing or loose laminate trim on a back splash (just the 3/4 stripping)
I plan on using an Armstrong adhesive, but I'm kinda unclear on what prep I should be doing with the edge. It's rather old work scraping or sanding mite do the trick, but should I be using a rubber cement remover and if so do I need to neutralizer it with something thanks |

Lacquer thinner,Mineral spirts should do the job.

Lacquer thinner, I don't think regular paint thinner is strong enough. Also I'd use a spray adhesive like 3M high strength 90.

Re: Replacing Trim On Laminate Back Splash
Be careful about using a solvent based adhesive remover.
Keep in mind that some of the solvent will penetrate the substrate and prevent the new adhesive from working, not to mention, softening the adhesive on the face laminate. I would go ahead and clean the laminate strip (if you are reusing it) with lacquer thinner then scrape off as much of the adhesive you can from the substrate. Don't worry if you can't get it all off. Then reglue with contact cement, apply the new strip and roll it down. The best way is to replace the splash if it isn't mechanically fastened to the counter top. That way you can edge it properly with a trimmer bit. Last edited by bert0168; 10-02-2008 at 07:40 AM. |

Re: Replacing Trim On Laminate Back Splash
Never sand as you'll leave an uneven edge and then some will not glue down properly. A good trick I use to get the last little bit is to use a small hand plane to shear off the last little bit.
