Question

Random Lally Column

Have a non-anchored lally in middle of 11' run under a 3 1/2" by 9" engineered wood laminated beam. One end of the run is supported by a lally that is properly installed w/ footing below poured 4" floor & the other end supported with vertical wood structure of exterior wall of house. The middle lally is out of plum and simply rests upon bottom steel plate. Haven't found MASS bldg code reference to determine if middle lally is necessary. Any thoughts? Also, any recommendation on how to trim-cut steel lally plates?

Thanks,
WJS

Re: Random Lally Column

One would have to guess that
it wasn't simply being stored there.
Someone at least thought it
was necessary.
I would get someone knowledgeable
to take a very close look at it, and
what is above it.

Re: Random Lally Column

The building code won't tell whether or not it is needed. Bring an engineer in to calculate load and he can tell you.

Is there a post that comes down on top of the beam in that location?
