This is us going out and finding someone to build for, then building them a ramp. Take a peek at the Liability Release I posted on the RAT website - it should cover your company in regards to the homeowner. Yes, you will have to verify that the person you're building the ramp for actually owns the home. Yes, your company does need to have Liability Insurance. No, Ramp-a-thon does not need to become an LLC.

Sorry, guys, I don't have the time to try and coordinate that type of venture. This was always a "give you the information so you can run with it" type of deal. Run it like you would any other job, same protections, same conditions. If you want, write up a contract w/ the HO. Everything standard except in the payment schedule, you've got nothin' but 0's.

Mac
Mac I totally hear ya. I just figured I'd post the results of my lawyer questioning.

You got it right. We are all builders. We shall build ramps like any other job, the whole RAT concept is just the community aspect of it for all of us.

I am off to build a ramp!

Oops, I have to find a candidate first. So far, no great leads...I have some more checking to do over the weekend.

Re: Ramp-A-Thon

For leads to those who might need a ramp you could try a local independant living center or a rehab-hospital, they should be able to help lead you to someone who is short on funding and needy.

Re: Ramp-A-Thon

This is a fine effort and a great idea. We receive fairly regular requests for donations of material for this type of thing, and we generally do provide it, in coordination with a local dealer. Next time I get a request I'll look to see who's in that area, it would make that much better for the person in need.

Re: Ramp-A-Thon

Hey guys, count me in to build a couple.

Just a thought to help bring some more awareness to the cause. How about a logo for our trailers or vehicles that says something like "Proud to be a Ramp-a-thon Contractor". Possibly send them out once the contractor has proven that he has built a ramp.

I don't remember seeing one, but what about a tagline too? To help people understand what R.A.T. is about. Maybe "Providing Accessibility through Generosity" or something.

Just some thoughts.

For plans and permits, I would think that most BIs would do whatever they could to waive the fee without a lot of red tape. Especially if they know you and your work already. I do not forsee all the ramps being as straightforward design-wise as Mac's by me as many houses have very awkward entryways and approaches to deal with. Again, I would hope that a warm-hearted BI would take a quickie drawing and let us just build for the sake of getting it done.
You never know with some people. People just like to complain.

There is an organization here that hands out warm meals to homeless people, but are having problems with the city for some stupid details that I can't quite remember right now.But I was amazed when I heard about it. It involved something about liability if someone got sick from eating the food.

Damn! How about someone dying because they have NO FOOD?! Now you can't feed them in case they get sick from the food?

I am aware of the problem, Same one our church has. No home cooked food allowed for any events which include fund raising , shelters, food banks etc. Must be commercially prepared or canned.

Danno, glad you're on board! Damn decent of ya to build two! Right on, man!
Shoot your business contact info to me, either PM or email, along w/ a graphic of your logo. I'll get you added to the crew...

I don't think I'd be outta line in suggesting that the "I built one" logo incorporate not only the RAT logo, but CT's as well. This is the forum in which I could talk to you all about this, this is where we're realizing the particulars. Good idea though, if not a physical sticker, at the very least a virtual one for papering up your website...

Tagline? -
Everyone who needs a ramp, deserves one. We build 'em...

I'm sure there are much better ones out there, but at least I'm not cursing in that one!! Other thoughts?

Re: Ramp-A-Thon

I'm not sure, but I believe the VA will cover the cost of a ramp. If they don't, they should. However, it would more than likely go out to bid.

I think what you are doing is fantastic! If anyone is doing one near Southern Utah or Northern Nevada, I'll paint it! I saw this company at a Builders Show, has some info you might be interested in.

Re: Ramp-A-Thon

Is anyone having particular difficulty finding a recipient? Conversely, has anyone found an easy path to starting up their project?

I'd like to get some feedback on the suggestions that were given (woundedwarrior, homes for our troops, VA center, etc) as to whether those options are useable...

We had our initial HBA board meeting in Jan., at that meeting the RAT committee was introduced and approved - we'll have our first RAT committee meeting in late Feb. At that point, I'll have the builders locked in and the process started on recipient applications.

Maybe ask to speak w/ the PR rep when you're contacting agencies/organizations...

Thread's been kinda quiet - I'm assuming no one has questions or comments about their projects, everything is moving ahead smoothly.

strathd, if you'd like to be listed as a RAT builder on the website, be sure to get me your business contact info...

RC, thanks for the offer and the link. The more information we've got, the better informed our decisions will be. Not sure if we've got other members here in your part of the woods - if someone signs up, I'll have them get in contact w/ you.

I know in Indiana the state legislation passed some rules regarding the same issues, not realizing they prohibited carry-in dinners, etc. So now they over look the churches. Last I heard they were trying to make an exception for it. We just had a carry-in today. Man it was great. Best cooks around.

I just found this thread so I'm going to do some follow-up on the links and more research to see what's in my area.

I just did a ramp for a buddy (VA paid for it), so I guess that does not count, but I'll do a couple for free!!
