Mac, I finally got one - should have it done by the 4th of December if everything works out.

Wow... you guys are awesome. I came across this initiative as relatively new here... (see my profile). I would be more than happy to put a link on my site at Rockbridge Designs and write an article about it on BlogCritics where I am an a contributing author (under a pen name). Let me know if you guys are ok with this first...

John - I would PM - Mac / BuiltByMac as this is his baby - I think it would be great to see how many more we could possibly get done this year

I think you will need a few more posts before you can PM him though

Re: Ramp-A-Thon

I may be late to this as I was on a break from the site when it started. I am interested in getting something like this started with some of us NJ guys here. I built a ramp for a church many years ago and never charged them labor, just for the Materials. I'd do it again and hopefully get the materials discounted or donated.

Let me know how you guys doing with your programs in your areas. I'd like to promote this idea locally and see who is in need.

Re: Ramp-A-Thon

I'll be building another ramp this year. Aging Services contacted me about a lady who needs one but doesn't fit their criteria.

I'll take a look at the project, if it's doable, I'll get some material donations lined up and build it. I'm no longer in the HBA so this will be my own thing.

Re: Ramp-A-Thon

Right on man, this is one of the coolest things i've seen in a while! I actually try to go out at least once a year and do a job for someone who really needs it. I donate my labor, nails, hardware, materials, and anything else I might have on hand.

I've done stairs and ramps for little old ladies, wheelchair ramps for churches, general repairs, etc... I've been doing this for probably the last 10 or 12 years. It's a great feeling knowing you helped someone out who really needs it. I love to do the work for the little old ladies... they ALWAYS make me baked goods...

I actually just finished a bathroom remodel for an old couple. They were showering in a 30"x30" stall, had a tub but it was 3 steps up and in, a toilet that was about to fall through the floor, and a vanity that was a disaster.

I tore out the tub and put a 5' pan in so they can sit and tiled the walls, new valve, etc., fixed the toilet, turned the old shower into a linen closet, new vinyl floor, new vanity and paint. A bit more than I usually do but these poor people needed someone to help them badly and with barely enough to cover materials it was a challenge. The smile on their faces is why I do it.

Done with that one though, until next year! Let me tell you... i've got a few stories about some of these "special projects"

If you're actually interested in this project, I recommend going back and reading through this whole thread...and the other two linked in the first post.

ALL your questions will be answered.

I'm not sure why the Ramp-a-thon avatar gets automatically added to a new account - seems to defeat the purpose. oh well...

I think someone turned it on by accident. It wont automatically be added.

Re: Ramp-A-Thon

umm not really something I deal with that often but sand & stain won't last long
You may wish to look into the slip resistance of certain products - I think TimberTech has a product that is rated pretty well & there are some coatings for marine docks that might work. Hopefully one of the deck builders up north will chime in

Re: Ramp-A-Thon

An anti skid epoxy would be perfect, but don't know if it would be in the budget.

Try antiskidtapeshop.com also. I've ordered their industrial grip strips for printing and processing plants before and they hold up well.

Actually have to order about 800lf of it for the mall and will be pricing them out again.

Re: Ramp-A-Thon

If the wood is dry enough to hold paint, I've added Skid-Tex to regular porch oil paint with pretty good results..
