Questions On Insulation

I just bought an 110 y/o home, th attic (which is half of the up stairs) is not insulated, I would like to make this a useable space.
Heres the ??? the roof joist are only 4 inchs deep so I belive that doesnt allow enough air flow for roll insultation.
Would solid foam board be good enough.
and if so,do I put a vapor barrer up before or after.
Im mostlikey going to use some type of wall board, If I'm brave enough maybe drywall.

I posted this under remodleing but only got one reply

thanks
john

Re: Questions On Insulation

Hey John. I think your probably referring to the rafters being 4". I think I would be a little more concerned with the size and loading of the floor joist, rafters, headers, etc. I personally am not to worried about bringing old homes up to current codes but I would be concerned with bringing the structure up to a standard that would not cause you or future owners problems. I would be looking for a structural engineer who likes old homes. No sense using one that doesn't like old homes. He'll just tell you it should have fallen down 90 years ago. <P>

As far as insulation is concerned, i don't think your 2x4's will be able to adequately insulate your living space in your climate.
